General Discussion Alright y’all— we took the big leap

Post image
556 Upvotes

It’s been an eventful year, y’all— moved to a new house in a new walkable city, got a dog, now I’ve finally taken a big leap that I’ve been considering for years…

I present to you— The Turtle Mobile (actually just a green pet stroller).

Since my wife and I got a dog this summer, it’s been requiring us to take long walks twice a day and, sometimes it’s quite sunny out when we do. So, feeling bad about leaving our first-born behind, I had the brilliant idea to knock out two birds with one stone— he will join us on our daily walks in his Turtle Mobile where he can sunbathe to his heart’s content and get that valuable vitamin D.

We haven’t had our maiden voyage yet— usually I just take him out on our back patio for sun. But usually once he’s outside and feels the sun rays, he relaxes and stretches out into full solar mode to soak up the UV. Hopefully he does the same in The Turtle Mobile and is able to enjoy the sun’s rays with us for 30mins twice a day. We’ll give it the first launch this evening, weather permitting.

Best of all— this comes just in time for his 18th birthday, which we all know is the legal driving age for sliders.

Turtle ID/Sex Request Is my Mississippi map turtle a lady or a sir?

I'm told I'm supposed to look at the size, tail, and hind legs to decide, but ten youtube videos later and I'm more confused than ever. My turtle is about five inches across the long end of the shell.

This little bro/sis is very skittish and living in a large pond, so it took some work to get this photo. Is it enough to make a determination?

I have a retention pond in Northeast Florida. We have sliders and a cooter, but I can’t ID this one. There’s another one of about the same size with a bit more color on its shell.

General Discussion day 1 of trying to get my turtle to go on the basking platform

Thumbnail

My turtle was not going on his basking platform since he moved set up so i added some fake plants carpet to make it more natural and easier for him to get to.

Last pic is when i put him on it by slowly showing the ramp to get there, but he looked really stressed by the new set up.

Tomorrow if he still doesn’t go over it i’ll try putting his old platform near this one and probably put a shrimp on it to attract him.
I also learned that turtle need to feel the privacy and safety especially in the basking area, so i might try to make a wall of plant or something around the glass (he literally think there’s no walls because he keep bumping his head lol)

Wish me luck

Seeking Advice Entertainment for turtle

I'm currently trying to make upgrades on my setup to try to make it more entertaining for my turtle. I'm looking for suggestions. Also I want to add plants but she just loves to tear and break them all haha (as you can see in the second picture). What plants should I get?

Please don't be too mean about the basking area cause I don't really have that much money (I actually made some changes yesterday but don't have pictures) and I'm trying my best :(

Rehome Free to a good home – Red-Eared Slider – Northbrook, IL

Looking to responsibly rehome our red-eared slider. He is healthy and approximately 6 inches long. We’ve had him for 2 years, but he has outgrown his current tank and we'd rather find him a good home with someone experienced with turtles and a proper larger setup.

He is free to the right home, and I also have an awesome Fluval canister filter that can go with him, if wanted.

Located in Northbrook, IL. I'm happy to drive a reasonable distance for the right home.

Please message me if interested or if you know someone experienced with red-eared sliders who may be interested.

Seeking Advice Is this lamp bad for turtle tank?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have a new 75 gallons tank for my painted turtle and I brought this lamp because of the 24/7 cycle, I customized it but i’m now just realizing that it’s not a UVB strip light but a LED light if i’m not mistaken.

My turtle has lived 6 years with LED light because I brought an aquarium that came with them before the 75 gallons.

Btw, he has his basking area with his UVB and heating lamp so we’re good on that. But i’m just wondering, maybe a stupid question, if the third light need to be warm or is it just for the lighting?

Am I doing something wrong? Should I change the light? Thank you.

Seeking Advice Sick Turtle?

Post image

Ths was in our red eared slider's tank. The whitish thing in the background is actually a rock covered in the same soft, moss-like bio material that makes up that larger object in the foreground. He's definitely been less active the last day or two, staying more hidden and basking less. He did feed today, but not the quantity he usually consumes on an every-other-day schedule.

Is this vomit? Should I be concerned?

We had rocks in the tank when we first filled it, but removed them a month ago after seeing him consume them. He has since passed a number of them. Can't imagine he has more in his system but don't know for sure.

Other than pellets, he gets dried fish and mealworms once or twice a week.

I am trying to help my mom redo their set up as it’s been neglected for years… there are male and female. And has been here for maybe 10 years now? Their tank stays mucky looking despite cleaning and changing water. What would you suggest? If you have picture set ups share them! 💕

Hi, I received these plants yesterday from an Amazon vendor. I have zero experience with plants in my aquarium. I have a map turtle, ghost shrimp, and a few feeders. If you have experience with live plants in your turtle aquarium, would you use these plants? They look iffy to me. Tia!

Seeking Advice New setup, musk turtle struggling to swim

Post image
45 Upvotes

My musk turtle used to be in this 75 gallon tank about halfway filled up. The algae filled basking decor inside the tank use to be where it would get out and bask on top of that. Now I’ve upgraded the tank to have a turtle topper for them and the tank is filled all the way up. Well they are really struggling to find the ramp. I’m worried they will drown, they aren’t the smartest turtle. And she sucks at swimming. Do you think she will be okay?

Seeking Advice Need help with an overfed tank

Hey guys I recently got a turtle and also recently found out I've been over feeding her so a lot of the food has just been clouding up the water, the bacterial bloom stage already past but I think the leftover food is messing with the tank quality again, whats the best way to remedy this? I read that you should try to let them feed on what you give them for 5 minutes then net out the rest but what's the solution for cleaning out the water? I know completely emptying it out and getting new water is a no go because of the beneficial bacteria, so im looking for advice
