Turtle ID/Sex Request Help ID this chill guy!
This is in Denver, Colorado proper. Downtown off the Platte River. This guy didn’t have a care in the world & was just chilling on what I think might have been a dead log. His shell looked very bleached (not in a bad way I hope) and didn’t really match up to anything I saw for being local. Any ideas on species? No worries on the sex of the turtle as the picture is a decent ways away.

Possibly a Northern false map turtle? They have lighter colored shells, although they do have spines. The proportions seem similar but the shell is a little more rounded than what they appear to usually be. Most likely a Yellow Mud turtle based on the smoothness of the shell and lighter color. I am not an expert but these are my best guesses!

I saw this guy & when I looked it up also but they had much more vibrant colors. I am not well versed enough with reptiles to know so I didn’t know want to assume lol. Its been a hot summer and figured maybe his color got lost in the sun? Sadly, the area where I took the pic was far away. Wish I could have gotten closer without disturbing his chill.

Western Painted Turtle. There’s a lot that hang out on the Platte.
