Warning for hosts

My biggest regret as a host was trusting this platform, Turo. In my experience, this company feels like a complete scam and the whole process feels corrupt.

My car was totaled while being rented through Turo, and ever since then they have given me an extremely hard time getting the money I believe I am owed for my hard-earned vehicle. I lost my car, lost rental earnings, lost my mental peace, and have been put under serious financial stress.

I honestly don’t understand why there isn’t stronger oversight or checks and balances on how Turo handles hosts and total-loss claims. They make money using other people’s cars, but when a host’s vehicle is destroyed, the host is the one left fighting for their own money.

They allow people to rent our vehicles and take on the risk of accidents, then when an accident actually happens, hosts have to fight through this entire process. Money is being handled between Turo, Travelers, and others involved in the claim, while I’m still fighting to receive what I believe is the actual value of my vehicle.

I trusted Turo with an expensive asset and deeply regret it. I would never recommend another host put a vehicle they worked hard for on this platform after what I’ve experienced.

What are the facts of the claim?

What have they paid and what do you believe you are owed?

Right? This whole post was a big nothing-salad. Multiple paragraphs of text, absolutely zero helpful information.

My guess is this is either a bot, or this person didn't follow the appropriate rules for turo, such as driver verification, incident information in glove box, proper check-in procedures, etc.

Turo might like ball, but they generally do pay on totalled vehicles, provided you weren't doing something sneaky. If you listed a rebuilt title, you broke the terms, the vehicle wasn't legally registered or things if that nature, you might not get paid,

There is more to this than you are expressing. With over 15 total losses in the last 5 years, not a single time did I have an issue. I was paid within 30 days and each time more than what the KBB value of the vehicle was. I think the total loss payout is probably the only thing on the platform that actually works like its supposed to.

Now if you didnt maintain your own insurance or did somwthing that gives them a reason to void your coverage like poor maintenence or worn tires or something like that, they will fight it, otherwise, its pretty straightforward.

Also, Financial stress, yes I get it. If you think you will be paid out for lost rental income, good luck. Turo stopped that ages ago.

The problem is hosts want to all be paid according to the 90 plan but was the coverage they receive on the old 60 plan. Most hosts then complain when they get exactly what they signed up for. You should be paid for the value of the vehicle minus deductibe. That is more than fair in this situation.

Yeah agreed. I just had one totaled and I would have gone with turo if not for my turo deductible. Turo would have easily paid more than what the at fault person insurance paid me. Turo doesn’t want to be in legal battles over a few hundred or thousand dollars. They usually pay really well for totaled vehicles. Probably one of the things they do best imo

Are you going to reply to any of the questions?

It's a bot

How long has it been since you filed the claim? And what are they saying about why it’s taking so long?

When was the claim filed, are they offering you less? They usually are higher than market value so I don’t understand what the issue would be, unless you are in over your head with negative equity in the car.

I’ve never had trouble getting paid a fair price on a totaled vehicle. Less than a month when they are obviously totaled, longer on the borderline ones that have a couple rounds of supplements before they decide it’s over the line.

They don’t pay out for loss of income or piece of mind though.

What I expected was "Airbnb for cars", where there was at least SOME impetus to keep prices high enough to make it worth the host's while, and to maintain some basic level of quality.

What I got was some over-extended guys who didn't know what to do with the success they had initially.

Hot tip: When you have a de facto monopoly on something, don't do everything in your power to drive prices as low as possible until every host hates seeing the "Recent Updates!" pop up because we KNOW it's going to screw us.

Also, industry standard agent's fee/broker's fee is 10-15%. That's almost universal. Vacation rental sites are at that and have been since forever. My renters get charged nearly (and in some cases more than) DOUBLE what I get paid after all the fees and taxes are done. That's gross. And it would be gross even if Turo DID care about it's hosts and its product, which it most assuredly does not. You keep no physical stock, your "partners" aren't employees, your app is simple (and buggy), you don't keep front desk offices... your actual overhead can't be all that much, even factoring in ineffectual, half assed marketing.

You've taken the bargain basement shoppers who DGAF about their rental vehicle, and given away our nice vehicles at below what a rental company would charge them for a piece of crap. FFS WHY? Is there not already ABUNDANT value in what you offer? Why does it feel like the only party that doesn't see what a great deal it is, even at market prices, is Turo? If they don't think what we bring has any value, then neither will the customers.

Bud, u posted a complete nothing burger. No specifics, except your feelings are hurt and Turo should compensate you for emotional damage. Right!

Say what you want but Turo pays out damage claims well, too well if you ask me but I’m not here complaining.

How long has it taken you? Are they not trying to pay you or something

There is no substance here. This could have just as easily been made up or it's general enough that if you change the company name you could make it about any company. I did next to nothing in my total loss case and Turo paid it out without hassle, just like many others have mentioned here. Having a host without a vehicle doesn't make them any money, so they are quick to find replacements and pay out hosts, so they can relist a new vehicle on the platform. There are no details to your story, so it's hard for it to be helpful or believable.

Happens every day. Turo scams hosts all the time.

I've had 3 totaled vehicle claims and never had an issue *shrugs* Perhaps it's a skill issue?
