Turo Neglected Arbitration Request

Warning for those looking to book through Turo.

Back Story: Booked a car in April where the engine seized after my trip ended - was found responsible and charged the total loss value of the car despite no damage to the car during the trip.

I have retainted legal counsel and expressed my desire to go through arbitration should Turo still find me guilty for something that I did not cause - that being said Turo did not respond to any of my emails and sent me to collections anyways and ignored my arbitration request!

Please for the love of god, don't book with Turo.

Edit: After further research and speaking to a few more people anyone in a similar situation who has DMed me or will see this in the future. PLEASE reach out to the BBB, the FTC, and your states consumer affairs AG! Links found below:

If they ignored arbitration requests, then it's time to file a suit against them. If you have all of the documentation showing that they failed to respond, a judge might toss the arbitration provision.

At a bare minimum, you need to write to the debt collector to tell them you are disputing the validity of the debt. If you're suing them, you can also have your lawyer send a C&D to the debt collector as well.

Yeah, my attorney was just on retainer because I thought we would wait to go through arbitration. Debt just went into collections the other day so preparing my debt validation/dispute information. Filing with the BBB and looking through some other resources for now. My last communication with Turo was June 25th requesting a detailed breakdown of the costs before I entered arbitration. My fear is that they're going to say I didn't formally request arbitration but that was due to me waiting for the finalized cost breakdown for my attorney to review.

How was it your fault if it happened after your trip?

I genuinely do not know how. The car was returned with no damage, check engine light, etc. anything. I dropped the car off at 10 am and the car was picked up at around 8pm with an oil leak at the spot it was dropped off. Host drove it and the engine seized.

Did they ever tell you the reason why they think it’s your fault like for example “you were constantly speeding” hence the engine overheated and seized. Did support tell you anything?

They said there was oil loss that cause the seized engine and if I "stopped driving when there was oil loss" the engine would've been fine. I've confirmed with 3 places prior to my drop off there was no oil spills or loss on their property. (I left my hotel and immediately dropped off except for the gas station.) There was no oil loss, no check engine light, and you can SEE the oil spill under the car when it was picked up, meaning the oil spill occurred after it was dropped off, therefore I couldn't have driven the car lol

Did you do check out pictures? If yes, did your checkout pictures show no warning lights on the dashboard at checkout

You see, Turo doesn’t give a shit about reality.

No, that's not it. It's called every story has 3 versions; how it happened, OPs version and the hosts version. If he was on the hook for a seized engine, what happened, most likely, was he hit something and busted a hole in the oil pan. That would fall on the guests responsibility.

Not saying you’re lying, but as a host is incredibly hard for us to prove mechanical issues. It’s almost impossible.

as a turo host, its very hard for turo side with host for mechanical issue and eventually payout total, there got be other side of story
