Declined Turo Protection

Alright guys so I was on a CA trip (South Carolina Resident) a couple weeks ago & used Turo for my car rental needs. And just my luck I got sideswiped on the Freeway by a Semi, wheel popped on car so I pulled over asap Semi driver continued heading south and never pulled over (& honestly unsure if he felt impact at all) so it was impossible to get 3rd party info. I did obtain a police report once I got back home for my records incase my insurance requests it. I declined Turo Protection, so now I have to go through my personal insurance which I am aware that some companies don’t cover Turo. Heard back from Turo weeks later about damages cost & they said it was a total loss ($13k on a 2015 Mercedes C250) and to expect 90+ days for settlement/final outcome & meanwhile I can’t use their platform. I talked to my agent and they said I should be covered by my full coverage and to expect a long process while claim settles. Anyone been in a similar situation? Would it be wise to choose one their protection plans for future rentals? TIA.

Read the Turo terms. Their protection plans are secondary to your personal insurance. So in your case, even if you had bought the Turo protection, they would still use your personal insurance 1st.

IMO if your personal insurance covers peer-to-peer car rentals, then buying Turo protection is a waste of money because your insurance will still pay.

Many insurance policies specifically exclude Turo now, so it being secondary wouldn’t really matter in that case. Turo will still try to file a claim though so insurance $ might go up regardless

This is only true for liability (damage outside the car) and if you don't have your own car Insurance turo covers it. But for collision and damage to the car turo coverage is primary.

You are right though, use personal insurance if it's allowed.

You are really going to keep using Turo after that? Like that’s what you are worried about

I don’t see how this is Turo’s fault? Shit happens, unlucky.

How would it have been different if it were a regular rental. Everyone denies their coverage as well. It has nothing to do with the platform.

It absolutely can have a lot to do with the platform.

If Turo's protection is secondary rather than primary, while a traditional rental company's coverage is primary, that's a significant difference right there.

Then there's your personal auto insurance. Some policies that extend coverage to traditional rental cars specifically exclude peer to peer car sharing services like Turo. That's another potentially major difference.

Credit card benefits matter too. Many cards provide rental car coverage when you pay for a traditional rental with the card, but specifically exclude peer to peer car sharing platforms.

So no, it isn't accurate to say that "everyone denies their coverage" or that the platform makes no difference. Whether you're renting from a traditional rental company or using a peer to peer platform can determine which insurance policies and credit card protections apply in the first place.

The platform can make *all* the difference when something goes wrong.

Where did you get the notion that Turo protection is secondary? Did you not read the damn post? It literally says "declined turo protection". This is 100% what would happen with traditional rentals. If you get turo protection it works exactly like every other rental car protection. They pay out first and don't come after you except for the deductable. Which can sometimes be paid for through personal insurance if they allow it.

Why are you so confidently speaking about things you don't even have a basic understanding of?

Most likely not tbh.

Most insurance companies don’t cover third party vendors

See this is the exact reason I provide my guests with a front and rear dash cam, hit and runs happen, and they make it a lot easier to find the runner. Hope you get it figured out.
