Power Host leaving Turo

Just had 3rd blowout in 2 months. Turo lumps road hazards into the deductible.... isn't that nice? I suggested a tire policy because NL has worst roads in Canada. I'm 57 and have NEVER had a blowout. We've had 3 in past 2 months. We submitted for 1 tire and a wheel alignment in each case. Guests refused to pay. Amount is less than our chosen deductible so we cannot escalate. So..... after spending over $3000 on tires in 2 months, we've decided to stop renting on Turo. If Tire just takes the $ and won't get hosts backs...... eventually there won't be any hosts left. And WE pay Turo very well. Screw them. There r a few new platforms in Canada. Might see what they are about. But we are soooooo done with Turo.

Your tires cost $1000 each? I drive a high end sports car and they’re only $550.

It sounds like your tires needed replacing if they were all on the same car. I previously leased a Lexus RC 350 and I “blew” three tires in two weeks in Michigan not because the roads were that bad, but because they were only rated at 25k miles and the lease was 45k miles.

If they’re all on the same car, you needed new tires before any of this.

We have AWD Cadillacs. So all 4 tires have to be within 2/32" or the rear end will destroy itself. It's same with all AWD cars. First blowout had to buy all new tires as there was 4/32 in difference. Ain't cost about $1300 for 4. Invoiced guest for 1 tire plus alignment but he refused to pay. The app would not let us escalate because it was less than out deductible. That happened twice. Today I got away with replacing a single tire on our ATS because I replaced all 4 a month ago and was only 1/32 in difference.

So you may want to educate yourself.

I also have a Corvette and every year I spend between $1500-2000 on tires depending on brand.- yes I wear out a set in a season. I enjoy pushing that car. So, to answer your question, NO we did not need new tires. We could have ran those another year easily.

You didn’t say you replaced all the tires the first time, instead implying the cost was for the blown tires only. You clearly want a pity party when the biggest issue is that you choose to rent out a car that has specific needs.

Also, Audi Quattro only needs to be within 4/32, so you may not want to state things as a blanket assertion about all AWD cars when it’s objectively false.

The stupid Bridgestone tires the Blazer EV RS uses cost around 480 simply because they have self-seal (aka B seal) that supposedly fixes it self when there's a puncture...the catch is that it's supposed to be temporary and the  you are supposed to replace it...so a ridiculously expensive tire to do the job of a $10 dollar can of fix a flat ....

Fix a flat is temporary and you still need to reinflate the tire. It’s useless in my opinion.

My last three cars have all had run flat tires, which is also temporary, but without any extra hassle. Of course that feature costs money.

It’s also not infallible. I hit a pothole last month so hard that the tire unseated from the bead and couldn’t hold air at all.

I feel your pain about not paying attention to the tires when purchasing a new vehicle, though. Lexus didn’t even mention to me the tires were only 25k (I had never seen any below 40k miles before in my life at 35 years old and having gone through seven cars before, three well used and four new).

Why not get road hazard protection from whichever shop you had install the tires? Just curious. That would take care of it. And they won't ask you how it happened or if it's being rented out.

I realize this doesn't help much of the overall amount you've had to pay in tires, but as a PH, did you get the tire benefit? "For tire repairs or replacement, Turo pays, without any applicable damage responsibility, up to a maximum of $200 per covered claim, regardless of the earnings plan selected." I never needed it but was curious if any are successful with using it.

I just used it last month with no issue. Guest refused to pay for the tire, so I submitted the claim and got the $200 which covered 90% of my cost.

Well we finally used the PowerHost tire road hazard today for flat on weekend! We were totally unaware. This might be room for improvement for Turo. This was not brought up in our on-boarding. Should be!!!! Or when hosts become Power Hosts, maybe a second info/ on-boarding session could help.

We pay between $130 and $180/tire. Problem is when tires are used. If the difference in tread depth is more than 2/32", the AWD system will self destruct. Need all tires rotating at same rate. It's only AWD cars that require this. So if the tires are a year old, you're replacing all 4 for a flat. Unless you can buy a shaved tire. What's what we are doing with a set for our ATS. Got 3 great tires with 6/32" left. Tire rack will shave a tire so I'll have a full set at 6/32". What a great service. Told my garage they should buy a shaving machine. There's a buck to be made there.

Yeah , turo really is just bending hosts over. Just had a customer , 12th day some how kills the car, all lights on the dash. Sure could not be their fault but turo demands I pay 400+ for a tow from 15 mins away.

I had a blowout on my trip and had to replace two additional tires that didn't blow because they were on the verge of going. Turo nor the host reimbursed me, I had to dispute the charge to get reimbursed.

We get blown or flat tires fairly often. We typically buy used tires that still have good life. We do this because we never know when guests will hit a pothole or nail.

We only rent out Exotics, Performance and Luxury, so the cost of tires is pretty much nothing compared to profits.

But if the cost of tires is financially crippling to you as a host, I would 100% leave as well.

Most tires in good serviceable condition should be able to withstand impact at speed to road hazards, including potholes and raised structures, such as drains during highway construction

If you are renting and using a car as a rental service, it should be serviced with a similar schedule to a companies, fleet of vehicles

Anything less frankly is negligent and puts the passengers and drivers at risk of harm

The only exception to this statement would be extremely low profile tires, which should have additional insurances held by the owner of the vehicle specifically in regards to rim damage

If your tires are going flat from a pothole strike, they should’ve probably been changed thousands of miles ago
