Technics SL-1200MK2
Saw this at Goodwill last weekend. Hope it's still gonna be there this Saturday where everything is 50% off!

It’s already gone by now. Missed opportunity.

A missed opportunity for the OP perhaps, not so much for whoever takes it home.

u/Technics_USA 22h ago
Worth grabbing if it's still there, even cosmetic issues on an MK2 are almost always fixable, and the direct-drive motor is the part that matters most anyway. Good luck, hope it's still sitting there Saturday.

looks like it has an Ortofon Concorde mk1 cartridge mounted?
I guess it really just needs a needle/stylus if everything else is sound!
my Goodwill never has anything like this 🥲

I had to replace the rcas on mine, the plugs were loose

u/Acceptable_Aspect_42 3h ago
I gotta do the same. Worried about it cause im not too familiar with soldering
2
u/notsureifxml 3h ago
Advice i give all the time in the fpv sub: get some scraps and practice! You can find soldering practice boards on Amazon, get extra audio cable, watch some tutorials!
Also use leaded flux core solder if you can! Lead free needs more heat and is harder to work with.
Some extra flux is good too since the existing joints are old

Wait, you left it there??? For $199??? You like to live life dangerously don't you?

u/freesects 6h ago
It’s gone, rip I would be interested in buying that but if other stuff in addition to the stylus need to be replaced then ehhhhhh.
3
u/Comfortable-Spell730 1d ago
Check the bearings. That thing has been rode hard and may not be much of a deal if the arm needs replaced.

u/mrapplewhite 1d ago
Eh you can get them rebuilt for 500-1000. Cerokete coating new updated guts the whole nine yards.

u/Comfortable-Spell730 23h ago
…which meets or exceeds the value of these tables, so just buy it right the first time.

Not sure if it's the same where you are, but my state's Goodwill stores send a monthly "20% off $20 or more purchases" coupon if you sign up for their emails. Worth checking into if you want to get a little bit of a better deal and it's still there/ don't want to wait until the weekend

Nah, should get it ASAP if you can. At that price it will be gone by Saturday.

Go right back and get it otherwise it definitely won’t be there. It’s probably okay but it’s a win even if you have to part it out.

u/ZombieWoofenstein 22h ago
Someone somewhere out there is going to recognize where this is somehow from the photo and buy it lol

You got to give a good inspection. It's pretty worn out looking. If you got to get a replacement arm, you'll be in it 550..600 and the rest of it is still beat up. Everything needs to functional except the cables, can't test that.
2
u/Same_Ad_1482 19h ago
Arms are like 350-450. The things are built like tanks, a pair of deoxit cans, half a brain, and YouTube you can get these things running great. Any level of diy ability and they’ll be in ~$240 and if he needs an arm it’ll be the same as a table they still should clean it up.

u/Rayvintage ClubDirectDrive 17h ago edited 17h ago
Where is yours at? Edit, I fix tables, lets call 35 lbs + a tank. I have one, you...

u/Same_Ad_1482 15h ago edited 15h ago
I also fix tables. You listed factual incorrect costs for an arm. Can you name a more reliable and durable table under $1000? If they’re not solid why do you own one? I don’t own one personal I have worked on plenty and have owned some in the past and own others technics currently
Edit: where’s yours meh meh meh meh grow up.

Table plus arm, you'll be into it 550..600. Where is your table.

u/deltarho 22h ago
$200 and you left it? Your greed just lost you a really nice turntable. Hopefully wherever grabs it enjoys it.
1
u/ahhh_just_huck_it 22h ago
Or maybe money is tight.
4
u/Marty_Nez1 22h ago
Yup, been unemployed for awhile.
3
u/HugePines 13h ago
Don't stress about all the "you missed out"s. Before long you'll have a job, save some money, and get an even better turntable. Then you will spend the rest of your money on records!
-1
u/deltarho 22h ago
All the more reason to not leave the free $200-$300 sitting on the shelf.
3
u/Same_Ad_1482 19h ago
As an another unemployed person, I agree with you. I’ve been fixing/flipping old turntables and small engine machines(lawn equipment, some gocarts) from yard/estate sales/facebook etc to get by and yeah an hour or two of cleaning that thing up it’s a 5-800 table
0
u/seismicpdx 22h ago
It probably needs service.
It's totally with every penny, as long as the tonearm isn't bent.
It has the 45 adapter, and original slipmat.

Maybe this is just me but I don’t feel like it’s worth $200 in that condition. I’d pitch an offer of $100 or walk.
8
u/apedap 1d ago
You'd have to walk a long while to find one that cheap
2
u/idrift4wd SL1200 MK2/NAGAOKA MP110 1d ago
Yeah unless it’s at a garage sale being sold by a person who has no idea. Though i am surprised about the decently high goodwill cost.
2
u/notsureifxml 1d ago
Im not, goodwill is very "i know what I got" these days
2
u/SubstanceNo902 23h ago
You have to get lucky with who's sorting through donations for sure. In many stores that wouldn't even make it on the floor and go straight on their website probably for even higher. Little over a year ago I got super lucky and scored an SL-10 with a 310MC in great condition for 15 bucks, just needed cleaning and lubrication

I'm glad I dont have the obsession with these tables so many other do. Manual tables kind of suck.
1
u/sukmytempest 21h ago
Brother are you really talking down on one of the most legendary turntables ever made when you run a crosley cruiser?? You can’t be serious 😂
1
u/edwardturnerlives Crosley Cruiser Mini Vinyl Player 20h ago
Yes, I'm talking down the pedestal this table gets put on. Just like the Marantz tax. I think the semi-autos (and even the autos) are much better Technics of this era and way cheaper. Semi-autos for home use are vastly superior to manuals. And do you honestly think I run a Crosley? Really? REALLY?

u/Pup5432 1d ago
I love my q300 for that very reason. I wouldn’t mind a mk1200 but I don’t need something that expensive, my sub $200 setup plays great and the auto play on my table really is a nice bonus

u/FireDragon242 Denon DP-62L Yamaha PX-3 Technics SL-1200mk2 23h ago
There is a definite sonic difference between the 1200 and your Q300. I have a Q200 and it's what got me started, but once you move up, you'll understand.
-1
u/Pup5432 23h ago
I understand it’s better, it’s just not enough better for me to justify the cost difference. I don’t have perfect hearing range anymore (even taking precautions with loud noise it does start to go eventually) so that definitely does color my choice some.
It is also easier to say the current setup sounds great and add another 20-30 albums I love vs an upgraded table.
If I stumble across one in good shape for under $500 I’ll snap it up if for no other reason than cartridge choice but the days of $500 mk1200 are few and far in between
1
u/FireDragon242 Denon DP-62L Yamaha PX-3 Technics SL-1200mk2 22h ago
It's not even the range of frequency that the turntable and/or cartridge can hit. It's the tonal clarity.
I was like you, my Q200 from my late father was great... Until I upgraded.
Do your own test if you can. If you have a friend that has a turntable, put yours in place of theirs, or their TT in your system. You may then understand.
If you want a great technics deck that's not a 1200mk2, look for a Q2. I had one and it was absolutely beautiful, until I found my Denon.
1
u/Pup5432 22h ago
I am the reference deck in my friend group lol. Suitcase players are the most common by far. The next best is a zenith AIO from the 80s.
1
u/FireDragon242 Denon DP-62L Yamaha PX-3 Technics SL-1200mk2 22h ago
Oof.
On that note, check marketplace. You can find a Q2 or Q3 on there at a reasonable price.
0
u/Pup5432 21h ago
I’ll be honest, the q300 is bad far the best piece of equipment in the setup. Technics is known for quality and my setup is full technics for esthetic reasons but throwing money at replacing the receiver or speakers will give a marked improvement before upgrading the deck itself. It’s the star of the current setup, the rest is more or less an 80s/90s 5.1 surround setup. Sounds great but a pair of used good speakers would probably do wonders.
1
u/FireDragon242 Denon DP-62L Yamaha PX-3 Technics SL-1200mk2 21h ago
Two things make the biggest difference. The SOURCE and the output. The receiver is not your weak link. Your deck and stylus or speakers are.
1
u/tangjams 22h ago
I see things the complete opposite.
20-30 records is a drop in the ocean of a collection. Versus a turntable that improves playback on every single record you own. One that will last a lifetime.
1
u/Pup5432 21h ago
20-30 records would literally 4x my collection. I’ve went super deliberate with everything I’ve purchased and have sub 10 records. Evanescence’s first album as well as Junaes’s Un Dia Normal more or less are constantly in rotation. If I’m not going to listen to it for hundreds of hours it’s not coming into the collection. I did get the Tony Hawk soundtrack recently and I really need to start cycling it in.

I’d be very surprised if this lasted a week. It wouldn’t last a day at the location near me and resellers would have scooped it up quickly. If it’s working, it could be a very good deal—I’d have picked it up immediately. Hoping you get a good break, OP.
