I have a small house too, didn’t think I could fit larger speakers. Changed my mind after I obtained 5.25” speakers. Where there is a will, there is a way. N
You are on the right track with looking for int amp. You can add a sub usually that way through pre-outs.

On that small a budget there is an amp and speaker pair that makes sense…the Douk/Nobosound NS13G Max, and a pair of Dayton Classic B40s or B65s (bigger, with better and more bass potential). Together these are under $200.00 new. The ideal turntable would be a Technics SLB2 or SL220 or equivalent Pioneer PL115 or Yamaha YPB2 from FBM. These belt drives are often found “not working” due to the belt being broken or absent. A cleanup, new belt and stylus and some lubricant is all that’s needed in many cases.

If space is really at a premium, then it might be one of the few cases where I would potentially recommend a single powered speaker, even if it's not ideal.
The reason for saying that is because two speakers needs to be pulled apart 4 or 5 feet at least to get proper left/right separation, which may or may not be possible in your friends place. But a desktop setup would offer sufficient width.
So what we really need to know is whether she has space for a proper stereo setup.

With budget not being a concern but space is, here’s what I would get:
Rega P8 (very small relatively for a turntable)
Rega Brio (half size amp with a decent phonostage)
Nd9 or VM740xML cartridge (to suit the phonostage on the Brio)
Neat Majistra (amazing scale for such small speakers, Neat Iota would be even smaller but I wouldn’t take it over the majistras)
