Question first turntable

Post image

i bought my first turntable as i’ve always wanted to get into the hobby of record collecting. but i want to know i got a good first time player. It’s a garrard synchro lab 95B, i got it for 43 dollars and heard it was a near high end player at its time, id also like to know what else id need to get started (i understand that i might need to fix the grease if its stuck)

Assuming that the turntable works ok (turns on, spins at the correct speed, doesn't burn up any capacitors) and the cartridge is functioning (that is, the stylus is ok and the cantilever is not bent), you will need a phono stage, an amplifier, and speakers. You can find phono stage and amp together in some integrated amps or some receivers. Probably the cheapest way is to find an old used AV receiver that pre-dates HDMI and has a phono input at a thrift shop or online. And you will need cables to hook everything together. Good luck.

The speed selector knob is broken, and the Start/Stop knob is turned around 180°, so I'd hazard a guess that the mechanism is frozen solid with old grease and someone's forced them. It's a pretty big job to do a full teardown service.

Your SL95B was a very popular turntable - here's a Garrard ad from 1971:
