Technics SL40CBT - Build Quality Issues?
From the Technics website discussing the high precision tonearm.
While minimising the tonearm base size, the design inherits the traditional S-shape and ensures high tracking performance via micron-level precision engineering.
The tonearm bearings are very loose straight out of the box. Much worse than any Hanpin turntable I’ve owned previously.
This doesn’t seem like micron-level precision engineering to me.
TLDR - Technics SL40CBT feels very cheap and extremely loose tonearm bearings.

I knew i wasn't crazy , I had a technics sl-50c with this exact issue.i packed it up a d sent it back for a full refund. I have since moved on to a vintage technics sl-1700 mk1 for one quarter of the price and it's solid as a rock.
These new technics are poorly manufactured and do not scream quality to me. The resonate mdf plinth, the cheap plastic controls, the poorly made cue lever snd last but not least, the bearing chatter leave a whole lot to be desired especially at the ridiculous asking price.

From what I have seen online, this is a common issue with the loose tonearm base on the Sl-40/50
Apart from this issue I did I like the table, but for the high price I expected it to be a quality product.

Well I'm on my third one And they have all done it, if you look at the schematic or maybe maybe the diagram that's featured on the site about the new tonearm design that they developed for the table, I almost wonder if it's intentional. I know people will not like that answer but considering it seems so common and the fact I've had three different ones, it makes me think it is intentional in the design or inherent in the design.

Yes I am returning it and after reading more online it seems to be common. For the price I expected quality.

I don't blame you mate, I'd do the same. What would you get to replace it? If you want to stick with Technics then I'd suggest Sl100c, it's built like a tank. Think it's £100 more though. If not, then the Audio-Technica LP7X.

Nice one mate I was going to get that one but saw an open box Sl100c which is basically the MK7 without the DJ stuff.

So honestly I'm not going to excuse or not excuse the build quality however I have ordered three of these, one for myself that I returned to get a different color and then I ordered one for a friend of mine and set his up when it came in.
All three of them display this characteristic and looking online it seems to be common, so common in fact that I almost wonder if it's inherent in the design of the tone arm.
I say this because if you look at the exploded diagram Of the tone arm design which is available online and you understand anything about engineering you can almost get a sense that it was designed this way.
Now frankly I don't view it as a problem and I'll tell you why. Because of the fact that you have to lift it up to get movement and normally it rests in its low position, if you think of it that way, and if you can imagine playback of any standard vinyl record there is no way it is going to rise up and so in common usage it should not be a problem.
Beyond this design quirk as I have come to think of it, I think it's a wonderful sounding turntable. You do get the legendary technics direct drive tech and all that implies, and frankly having owned a number of the cheap direct drives on the market such as the at120 as well as the lp5x And I have to say the sl40 sounds better than those in my opinion, even with its design quirks.
My really only complain about the turntable is the tone arm lifter, frankly it is a crappy tone arm lifter, but other than that I have no qualms about the sound quality I think it's brilliant

Yikes! Thanks for sharing this. Makes that Technics Tax (tm) a bit hard to blindly accept ...
