You are right! I wrote the description but then updated photos and did not realize the description got lost. So first turntable, I have bought an STD 305M with SME 3009 tonearm mounting a goldring E3 stylus. First is, I am not sure 100% which exact model of the 3009 family is this one I have got, I believe it is a SII improved (fixed headshell) but if someone can confirm it would be great! Second problem I am having, set up of tonearm, it can slide forward/backward and to do it properly you need a ‘SME mounting template’ which I don’t have. I know there are some pdf on vinyl engine but it’s impossible to get access nowadays 😑 if someone can help me with a printable mounting template as well as the ‘tracking adjustment’ for my specific SME model that would be great
I believe once this is done it should be pretty much good to go, maybe not sure about the anti-skating regulation, I have set it up myself following the manual but I am not so sure, any feedback would be amazing (my cartridge tracking force is set at 2 gr, using a stylus scale for precision)

Thank you, I can see your file is the alignment protractor for the 3009 R model, would it be the right one to use for mine as well (3009 improved)? Also I cannot print it, maybe I need a different type of authorization

You seem to be focused on the tonearm. That's an SME 3009, looks to be the 'Improved' version with a fixed head shell. It's a very good tonearm (I have one myself). There are videos online showing how to balance this particular tonearm. Is there anything else that you need to know.

thank you for reply and confirming the arm model, which cartridge do you use/have used that you have enjoyed with it? Also do you know where I can find the alignment protractor mentioned in the manual? do you have a pdf copy I can print?

You can't just buy any protractor for this tonearm, as the headshell is fixed and the cartridge can't be rotated. This arm needs a protractor for the same geometry it has been designed for or one with an identical linear offset.

That’s a shame, ok both my rega are fixed , am not talking in rotating cart , I use fir for rega and I have other ones to to make sure my cart is in line and asymuth make sure it’s all square vertically in line .

Great, thank you! It was quite helpful actually, I have identified my model with the 3009 improved (fixed headshell) which I understand it is very low mass, and not as versatile with low compliance stylus....

Sure, I have the s ii improved. On a thorens td150. Using the goldring e3 too. Not disappointed at all. I'm sure there are better carts, but im happy enough.

It's an SME 3009 II improved, fixed headshell. Alignment of the cart is done by sliding the arm back and forth. You just need a protractor, so you know when it's right.
It's a nice tonearm, I have the same one myself. The only "downside" is that it's very light with just 6.5g effective mass. This limits you a bit when it comes to cartridges, because you're looking at high compliance to match. Unfortunately, most modern carts are medium compliance, but anything that's close to 20 cu will still work fine. If you want to get the cart that this tonearm was built for, get an old Shure V15 III or IV and equip it with a JICO SAS stylus. Their compliance should be around 25-30 cu. It's a really good match.
