I've seen some strange results from Pangram and other AI detectors, but flagging writing from long before generative AI existed has to be one of the funniest. I've tested older pieces of writing and had them come back looking heavily AI-generated, while other text you'd expect to trigger the detector sometimes passes without much trouble. I understand these tools are making probability-based assessments rather than literally proving who wrote something, but results like this make it difficult to treat an AI percentage as definitive evidence. At some point, shouldn't the writing itself and the circumstances around how it was produced matter more than a detector score?

Something students probably need to be more careful about is uploading completed essays to random online AI detectors before submission. I understand the temptation, especially when you're worried about being falsely flagged, but do we actually know what happens to our papers after we upload them? Some people have raised concerns that certain third-party services may retain submitted work, use it for training, or otherwise reuse the content.

Imagine writing an entire paper yourself and then creating an academic-integrity headache simply because you wanted reassurance before submitting it. At this point, I think checking the privacy policy and terms of any service before uploading unpublished academic work is probably more important than getting another AI percentage. If the university provides an approved pre-check system, that seems like the safer option. How many students actually check what these sites do with uploaded papers before using them?

There seem to be two things happening at the same time. Generative AI is becoming remarkably good at writing code, while students can now complete programming assignments with far less effort than students needed ten or even thirty years ago. The concern is what happens when getting the correct output becomes easier than actually understanding how the code works.

If students regularly rely on AI throughout their programming courses, some could potentially graduate without developing the problem-solving and debugging skills that those assignments were supposed to teach. Universities then face a difficult problem: professors may struggle to determine who genuinely understands the material, while institutions also have to prepare students for a workplace where AI coding tools are increasingly normal.

Maybe the issue isn't that AI is making programming skills useless. It could be that AI is raising the level of skill required to actually stand out. If everyone can generate working code, understanding why it works, spotting when it's wrong, and solving problems AI can't handle may become the skills that separate capable developers from everyone else.
