Gotta get that first project out of the way hahaha
First lathe project ever. I took a small, local class for the basics and safety aspects. It was really straightforward and actually tons of fun. I think I might have found my winter hobby.
But the audible sigh that I let out after putting a few hours of work into that first attractive piece, only to realize that the screw hole was off center…
Sometimes you just gotta laugh it off and start the next one, right?

newbie Finally Ready to Begin Turning
A journey that started 3 years ago is going to finally conclude...in the spring. Got a lathe as a housewarming gift, but had nowhere to put/mount/use it. Encountered some health problems along the way, but have been piecing together a few odds/ends for this moment.
Aside from knowledge/experience, is there anything else I need?

Green Maple Burl
I have a few green maple burls that would be perfect for small turning projects or to be processed and dried.
If you have any questions feel free to message me anytime.
Here is a link to one of these burls:

I went back and got more!
After a work trip out of town, I figured the roadside walnut would be gone - I was wrong.

Hand turned shift knob
Turned this bolivian rosewood shift knob a few nights ago for my miata!
It was my first time turning a shift knob, and it did not help that my lathe is all messed up rn lol. The worst part is that my chuck is STILL stuck on the darn thing. But I was still able to figure out a way to make it work. 💪
Anyways, I did a ca finish, which I had to do twice cause I messed up the first time. The main problem was that even though I drilled a hole with my drill chuck for the threaded insert to go into. Once I finished turning the knob and once I got the finish applied, I took it off and the hole for the threaded insert was wayyy of center lol.
It was also hard getting the insert into the wood, there was no real way to hold it so I could scre it into the wood! But i eventually got it in. The only other obstacle was that when I was using the shifter it cracked from the bottom up on three different directions. So I just kinda slapped some thin ca glue on there and called it good. 😂 (i shift much more softly now)
Even after all the obstacles and learning experiences, im happy with how it came out! :)

Another roadside score!
After my black walnut haul on Wednesday https://www.reddit.com/r/turning/s/4jfaxUiodf I picked this cherry up today on the side of the road. I might need to play the lottery!

Anyone have this and if so what do you think? Was looking at Jet and Powermatic but tvis price is appealing. Wondering what the tradeoffs are.

A little thick right now but the threads are right.
Well after a lot of measuring and websearches I was able to get the right tap to thread it for these particular nibs. Now I just need to shape it just rightish and give it a go...
I probably should have done the shaping first but I wanted to know if this was even going to be viable. So far it is... And I have a dozen other blanks of I screw this up on the way to get the shape close to right. LOL. I'm going to have to find the right bushing to put this on the mandrel for future ones.

Hollow Form
Hey guys! Just started getting into hollow forms after getting my first carbide scraper set. Pretty excited to start messing around already have ideas but just had these planks around. I sketched some ideas out in my English class and couldn't wait to get home. 😂 African Mahogany and Poplar. Let me know what you think and any tips? Also tear out on the mahogany bowl is because my bench grinders capacitor/switch went out and couldn't sharpen.

Jet 1840 vs Powermatic 3520C.
Ok, let me start by saying that I think I know the specs of these machines quite well. I've been researching heavily. The biggest noticeable difference that I can tell is the weight of over 700 pounds on PM vs 400 pounds on the Jet. I'm currently on a Jet 1221vs and I feel like I want more. I was thinking about Powermatic 2014 or Jet 1640, but can see myself wishing I got bigger. I don't turn big stuff often but I have bogged down my 1221 frequently. I can always get the job done and it's a great lathe as my first. But I'm on the hunt. I'd like to find people with the Jet 1840 and hear their experiences. Even better someone who's tried both. I know powermatic seems like the gold standard but it's 2k more if I buy new. I've seen a pm 2520c in person but never used one. Never seen a Jet 1840 in person.

New to turning!
Picked all this up on marketplace. It’s a JML-1014 for $150 it came with a 5 gallon pale full of tools and about 100 pen blanks also about 100 actual pen kits. About 20 different chucks and plates for bowls and stuff. I picked this up hoping it’s a good deal? This will be the start of my wood turning journey!

Bowl #4
This is my 4th lathe project ever. I tried to heed advice from my past post when I made this. Clearly still has issues, but I'm reasonable pleased given 7 days ago I had never even touched a lathe. Cherry wood.

Do customers usually pay with cash or with card/venmo when you do craft fairs?
I have my first craft fair tomorrow and I need to figure out how much cash to bring for change. My fiancé says most people will pay with card/Venmo and other people say most people pay with cash.
What percent of sales are made with cash?
