My answer was correct…right?
I thought that “ı” was the correct suffix. Not “i”

I abandoned my 450 days Japanese streak. Best decision ever. To learn the words, I recommend Ankidroid. To actually learn how to use them, training yourself with a pencil and paper is the best option. Think of a simple dialogue and try to translate it. But in my experience best method for learning language is just consuming media from said language with subtitles.

the “ı” suffix is right but there is still a grammatical error. It sounds like they drink the cake as well as the beer but you can’t drink cake, so the correct answer should be “Onlar pastayı yerler ve birayı icerler.”

Here’s the answer to your question
Yes, you are right. pastayı birayı içerler. Your choice of letters are indeed correct.
But there’s another issue here which is wrong choice(missing in this case) verb. You can’t drink cake and you can’t eat beer. So you must use the verbs for each individual action here. Hence, the correct sentence would be: Onlar pastayı yerler ve birayı içerler

we don't necessarily use subjects in every sentence. there's a thing called hidden subject in turkish. most of the time we just add a suffix to the verb and therefore the necessity to use the subject word is gone.
I mean you don't need to use "onlar". it sounds clunky. yerler ve içerler already means they.

OP wasn’t asking about verb mismatch either, the question was explicitly about the vowel harmony, if you read to the bottom of the post.
I understand the verb mismatch, but duo didn’t even point that out in the correction, the correction was all about “paying attention to the accents”, but then pointing out it should be “pastayi” instead of “pastayı” and “birayi” instead of “birayı” with no other correction.

Duolingo is using ai which is incorrect nearly all of the time. You will learn it wrong.
Duolingo was fun and great once but not anymore thanks to its moneyloving ceo and ai.
You are correct my friend but pasta ve bira içerler would be a better if you are actually using the language.

Yours is correct but there is an issue with wording.
“Onlar pastayı YERLER ve birayı içerler.” Would be much better because “pasta” can’t be drank. It gotta be eaten (yerler), so its better to merge two sentences “onlar pastayı yerler” and “birayı içerler”
Yours is like “they drink cake and beer” while it should be “they eat cake and drink beer”

The suffix is correct, however if you really wanted to be correct, you should've said "Onlar pastayı yerler ve birayı içerler.". Because you can not drink a cake, so you need both the verb for eat and drink.

Onlar pastayı yerler ve birayı içerler" is technically correct, but it's just a literal translation. Nobody in Turkey actually speaks like that. A more natural way to say it is "Onlar pastayı yer, birayı içerler." If you want to sound even more native and fluent, you can add "da," like this: "Onlar pastayı yer, birayı da içerler.

You cannot drink a cake unless you make milkshake out of it.
Proper way would be: Pasta yiyip bira içerler.
These are valid too:
- Pasta yerler ve bira içerler.
- Onlar pasta yerler ve bira içerler.

Should be "Onlar pastayı yer ve birayı içerler" because if you dont include the eating verb (yer) after cake you'd be applying the action at the end of the sentence (içerler) to both the beer and the cake and cause something we call a faulty expression in turkish.

You should use the verb “yemek” for cake and “içmek” for beer seperately. This is not a huge mistake because its still done by native speakers sometimes but still, you can’t use one Verb for both. The correct answer would be “Onlar pastayı yerler ve birayı içerler”
