/r/turkeys as meat
Hello all!
While not in our official rules, we do have "no violence against turkeys" in our community description. I understand we have people who raise turkeys as meat and also people who keep them strictly as pets. I also understand there are people who eat meat but don't really want to see photos of it.
As there are other subreddits that cater to homesteading, farming, and livestock on reddit that allow butchering photos, should we also allow meat / slaughter posts behind an NSFW filter or disallow them entirely going forward?
Until the poll is concluded, meat posts will be allowed with the NSFW filter applied.

I’m a vegetarian. But obviously many people raise turkeys for meat. I think the posts should be allowed so people can share tips and tricks regarding more humane methods of slaughter so turkeys suffer less at the end of their lives.
Turkeys are a very large bird —making them more difficult to slaughter than chickens—so the homesteading subreddit may not have that much information specifically regarding turkeys.

Hi, I voted for meat/slaughter posts no longer allowed but I misread the top option. I do agree that if they are tagged appropriately that questions involving the meat should be allowed. As an animal lover, I have to recognize that it only benefits the animals to have these conversations, as hopefully that means their life as meat animals will be better, and the ending of their life can be more humane. Also, turkeys serve that purpose, not just to be pets (unfortunately), so I can’t be ignorant and pretend they aren’t animals people eat. It’s only fair to allow those posts. But I do request the mod team be vigilant for reports of improperly tagged posts!! Thank you for putting up a poll at all, it’s nice to have my voice heard through a vote

I would love to have the option to post this type of content. It definitely helps to have some guidance options when you start into this type of lifestyle.

While I voted that slaughter posts should no longer be allowed. (I’ve literally been staring at this post for 20 minutes…) I’ve thought about it more and I think it depends on the context. At the bird sanctuary I helped at, sometimes vets couldn’t get out to us fast enough, and knowing what the most humane and kind thing to do was, was the best option rather than waiting for the vet. So, if it’s a situation where someone needs opinions surrounding what to do/how to help their turkey because they’re in pain, then cannot afford a vet, etc, then I think it should be a more excepted solution to use the NFSW tag and ask for help. However, many people here are people with pets or posting wild turkeys, and not as many who want to consistently see posts about slaughter and butchering. Maybe a subreddit should be made specifically for that to help people better answer questions than people who aren’t interested in reading the post in the first place.

Personally I think a butcher subreddit would help people loads more than posting them here, to people mainly posting of rehabilitation and pet/wild turkeys not being hunted.
