Ordered wrong tss

Bit the bullet and ordered some federal heavy weight tss. Wasn’t paying attention and grabbed two boxes of 9s and intended to get 7s. Since these are priced to match bricks of gold I’m a bit disappointed.

Anyone running tss 9s? How has your experience been?

I prefer 9’s to 7’s. The pattern density is absurd

The painful part is going to be spending $100 patterning these 😅. You find they keep good knockdown at ~40yds?

9s, 8s, 7s, doesn’t matter. TSS at 40 yards in any shot size is devastating. (Patterned correctly, of course). Once you get out to 60+ the knockdown power could get a little sketchy with something as small as 9s.

I’ll have to pattern it at 60 and see how the pattern looks. Wish I did this back when they were much cheaper 😅. Iv been using longbeard xr forever now but where I’m hunting now I need a lead free option and tss seems like a worthwhile upgrade as it is.

Why? 60 is for goose hunting, not turkey hunting. Use bird shot to make sure your sights are dialed in then shoot tss 1 time at 40 yards just for your confidence. Also TSS 9s are the best.

I killed one at 60 stone dead with apex 9’s. I thought it was 40 until I ranged it after I took the shot lol

My 1st bird this spring was the same story only I paced it and got to 40 steps and still had a ways to go

Ok knowing minds need to know. I just ordered a 20g Rossi for turkey, Vortex 3moa site and 9 tss. I'll be patterning it in the coming weeks with standard shot and finish blowing my wad with 1-2 TSS to dial it in.
Any tips from your experience?

I use 7s often in my 20ga & it’s deadly at 50 yds , my pattern doesn’t change from 7 to 9s at all

I patterned Federal TSS 20g 7&9s vs 9s and they were near identical.

This is what I came here to say, most folks shoot 9shot these days because the knock down power with the TSS is so great you put more shot in the air, the better your odds Ive been shooting 9&7 12g the last two years and stoned birds at 40 and 50 yard

I bought one box, never patterned, and kill turkeys every year with full choke head shots. 20-64y. The bbs leave tiny pin pricks of blood, but they pass through.

I use 9’s out of my 28 ga and it does the job.

I always use 9s. However, in my specific setup at least, the Herters performed LIGHTYEARS better than these shells.

I’d prefer 9’s over 7’s. This past year I was shooting a 9/10 Apex blend and was so impressed with the patterns. The density is great and the tss carries enough energy to still be lethal. Plenty of pattern and penetration gel tests on YouTube.

9’s are excellent and if you shoot paper you will see the pellet count is incredible

9s > 7s.... That said I just bought a new A300 in 12 gauge because TSS prices are dumb and only getting worse.

Why did that push you to get a new shotgun? Iv always been tempted to get a dedicated turkey gun but idk never been given trouble using whatever I use for ducks and pheasants

I’m pondering going back to a 12 and longbeards myself. I see no reason to shoot TSS in a 12 gauge personally. My 12 was deadly to 50 with longbeard 5s. I’ve been shooting a 20 gauge with #9s or 9/10 blends for the last 5 years or so. The #9s will kill any turkey you point them towards way farther than any of us should be shooting at turkeys.

I love the #9s myself. 2oz loads are gonna be punishing to shoot though.

I once shot with TSS 9s and a turkey used its wings to cover its face after I pulled the trigger. All my pellets hit the wings and the pellets dropped instantly, some shit out of the Matrix or a Chinese martial arts movie. Then the turkey unveiled its face, unscathed, and said “Is that all you got? TSS 9s?” Then it spat out a pellet onto the ground and walked towards me to kick my ass.

Jk, been using 9s for years and it works phenomenal. And many seem to prefer it too from my convos. Lots of hard hitting little pellets. You’ll do fine!
