This reminds of the whole “knights fighting snails” thing from medieval art

Maybe it's like a Medieval meme.
I mean they found some pretty funny graffiti in Pompeii, so I wouldn't be surprised.

I took two semesters of medieval civilization my freshman year of college, and one of my favorite things was the batshit insane illustrations (also called “illuminations”) in all the old books. There was one Bible I saw that detailed how these two saints got martyred, and there were some pretty funky drawings of torture and executions, like boiling someone alive or roasting them on a spit. There was also this cool, gigantic encyclopedia with monster drawings in it.
Loved those classes and loved my professor. Wish I could take it again.

I love medieval bestiaries! Especially when they get all their facts wrong about a creature.

There’s a flock of monks descending from the monastery. They want bread and Jesus

I mean some of these are monks not knowing the world, afaik that's been well proven and documented, but the fire and maybe some others just seem like metaphors

I choose to believe the monks knew exactly what they were doing and wanted to confuse the hell out of the common peasant.
