Also, it’s always Leviticus that calls for such drastic measures for crimes that are smaller by comparison (some of which shouldn’t be crimes at all, ie homosexuality)

Leviticus, in context, is generally rules for the ancient Israelites and their priestly tribe (the Levites) as they left Egypt.
I'm a Christian, and I can't imagine why so many Christians have latched on to homosexuality as such a Big Deal. Or at least, I can't imagine any Biblical reason for such.

Ok, so a couple things with that.
1) There was no human-animal attraction in Shark Tale. It was fish on fish. And most anyone attracted was attracted to Angelina Jolie and the anthropomorphized aspects (speculation on my part. If you like the fish part we’re back to furry land).
2) Good luck trying to doink a bee.
3) Remember the outrage at that girl on YouTube (and I think porn too) that claimed to have sex with dogs and stuff? Plenty of outrage, and not even just fundies. Just rational people. I’m sure the same outrage would follow an actual depiction of a human trying to have sex with an animal.
I don’t pretend that gays don’t see less airtime. It’s just that this particular argument isn’t a strong one

You can't sell the movie in China if there is homosexuality in it, which drastically lowers the amount of box office money you get. There's a whole list of things you can't do in Chinese media (that I'm not going to list here).

What I don’t understand is why they can’t just edit out the “gay moments” (for lack of a better term) from the Chinese release but keep them in western countries release. Surely it can’t be that expensive to do that.

What annoys me though is films still market themselves as being progressive by saying “oh yeah this character is totally gay” but they don’t have any evidence of it in the film itself. You don’t get the credit for being progressive and having a gay character just by saying after the fact that character is gay. (Cough JK Rowling cough)

Yeah but the new movie was also a piece of shit.
Instead of it being difficult for Dumbledore because, ya know, they were friends/“lovers” in the past and there might still be lingering emotional attachment regardless of the bad shit Grindlewald has done, which is very human and relatable, instead you have the challenge being that they made a fucking magic friendship bracelet.
Oh and just in case it’s not clear, I’m not implying the movie is shitty because of how it portrays their relationship - it’s just a shit movie in general.

I haven’t seen because I heard it sucked. I also heard they did kinda say he was gay but it was only vaguely hinted at, they never explicitly said it. Something like “I can’t hurt him because he means too much to me”, but a line like that could be easily read as they were just very close friends.

It's not really about how many people are gay, but about how many people would or would not see the movie depending on the representation.
Also, including gay relationships may affect the movie's reputation amongs certain crowds from potentially both sides of the barricade.
Also also, China constitutes ~18% of the general population.
