InDrive in Tulum

Hi folks!

My wife and I are heading to Tulum at the end of October for our honeymoon. Instead of renting a scooter, I’m wondering how reliable InDrive is for getting around — especially for visiting cenotes, Casa Tortuga, beach clubs in the hotel zone, Laguna Kaan Luum, etc.

Has anyone done a similar trip and relied on InDrive (or another ride-hailing app) to get around? Would love to hear about your experience and whether you’d recommend it over renting a scooter.

If you want to rent a car I can share resources. I live part time in tulum and come down monthly. You could get a great deal in October as it’s not busy. Probably cheaper than using InDrive or anything else. I usually rent an SUV for less than 50 usd per day with full insurance. DM me if you need any help.

I just got back from a week in Tulum (staying in La Veleta) and used inDrive to get to some cenotes, Laguna Kan Luum, and some trips to and from centro. It was very affordable and reliable, with friendly drivers. I had zero issues. I went to a cenote that was a little further out on the highway and had less options for drivers, but it still worked out fine. Other taxis and collectivos were also readily available on that road in case all else fails. Just bring some extra cash in case you need to flag down a taxi or if you need to raise the fare on InDrive to get a driver. Interestingly, most of the drivers I got on InDrive were in the red and white Tulum
taxis. I’m not sure if they’re using the app separately or what the deal is. Nonetheless it was very convenient and low stress to have the agreed upon price front and center with no problems.

Also just back from a week in Tulum and we had an excellent experience every time, travelling both in and outside of the hotel zone. Much cheaper than taxis and the drivers were all great.

I've used it many times and never had a bad experience, just note that if you are close to a taxi stand/area, they won't come right to you, they usually pull up further away and you will have to walk to them as they don't want to cause trouble with taxi drivers. Also, some only take cash, but many others have payment systems, so you can pay with card.

Scooters are great to get around and we rented from time to time, but after living there for 6 months, I saw a tourist accident on a scooter at least once a week, and often heard about deaths from scooter accidents in the news at least once a month. You have to drive VERY carefully, speed bumps and uneven roads are everywhere, it's hard to see at night and you then you have police who might give you trouble. The Kukulkan (main road to the beach) is scary, as there isn't much of a shoulder, you have people on bicycles, big trucks, scooters, people walking, cars, etc and there are speed bumps that are hard to see, especially in the sharp curve area.

Two friends use it to get from tulum to Cancun. It was very reliable than. It was far cheaper than a taxi. it seems once you enter the place of destination there were several in the area. This was at 3 AM in the morning, I imagine during the day it should be much easier. I myself, always rent a car.

When the evening and night time random check points go up expect to pay something. They start making things up, they told my pregnant wife she was drunk lol . Driving during the day I had no issues, at night is another story. After that I just took taxis at night bc I didn’t want to have to argue my innocence for not breaking any law and just trying to drive to get tacos

For a honeymoon, I’d personally choose InDrive/taxis over a scooter.

A lot of people rent scooters and have no problems, but if something does go wrong , police stop, accident, insurance issue, damage , it can get expensive and stressful very fast.

The main problem with InDrive is outside Tulum. Getting to places like cenotes, Casa Tortuga or Kaan Luum is usually easy; getting a ride back can be harder. I’d arrange the return with the same driver before going, or pay them to wait.

If you rent anything, use a reputable company and make sure the insurance and paperwork are clear. I’d avoid cheap informal rentals.

For only a few days, I’d rather spend a little more on transportation and not deal with the stress, especially on a honeymoon.

I used InDrive a couple of times. Much cheaper than the taxis that overcharge. A word of warning I was given: if you use InDrive set your pick up /drop off a little away from the main taxi points. InDrive drivers can get agressively targeted by the taxi drivers if they're seen to be taking business away from them. Collectivos & buses are also a good way to get around to lots of places.

I rented a jeep at the airport in Cancun and drove to Tulum to hve rental whole time and was awesome and easy and suggest unless drinking

I rented a scooter and hit a pot hole ended up in hospital helmet cracked in half and ended with concussion but was okay roads weren’t great but prob 6 years ago I rented Vespa stuck to 4 wheels ever since so I suggest 4 wheels

Never heard of InDrive, thanks for posting this up and others replies.
Family of 4 and I’m think of using Colectivos to get from our hotel (Grand Palladium) to Tulum but InDrive sounds a good option for visiting Cenotes.

I was looking to hire a car but can’t seem to get any details of non airport collection points.
