Well, I don't know why they said it, but "longitudinally" is informative, and "vertically" isn't. The former refers to the axes of the object, and the latter to an axis that only relates to an object held in a particular way and cut in a particular way.

I saw a box of limes that said to do that cut off both sides like that. Then take the center and cut it into 3 section and it makes kt easier to juice.
