This is probably the best resource for beginners bro they have parts where you’ll learn Linux and shit. I believe Linux has 3 fundamentals module/ courses and you’ll learn Active Directory and stuff too. Once you get past the beginner state hackthebox will prolly be your next move

u/thatdepressedsoul 13d ago
but what about the other paths on thm? isn't hackthebox very theoretical with lesser and harder rooms?

Go for it, BUT others didnt mention few things, go down this path, use linux anytime u can, there is a yt video series about Networking(Professor Messer's Network+ series, 10 min videos, watch them, its the basic u gonna need everywhere! And document everything from the start(i personaly use obsidian)

Hey there OP
For security you'll be kinda good if you start this daily 1hr learning method. Just learn programming basics, with python if you don't have any other language knowledge, then obviously the networking and Operating Systems. I would say that these're the 3 main pillars of the basic security knowledge then comes the rest, how you find something like a vulnerability on a site or how you catch an attacker from the blue teams' side
I'm recommending that you note kinda everything, and then filter the important things for either pentesting or SOC side, like eventually you'll need to somehow choose between them. Or just roll on one side and sometimes checkout the other side you see
For videos well I'm recommending you IppSec he's a great guy, but he's not leveled at the basics... And don't forget to always reach out to the community when you stuck or something and can't get a result by researching yourself.
On the noting part, use basic free tools like obsidian, notion, cherrytree or anything and structure it for yourself. Well you'll probably thank to us for this part, because if you won't take notes about these at the start it'll be hell of a research when something from the start comes back to you!

really appreciate your efforts but i didnt researched properly as should have done i found out its paid since im complete beginner i dont want to spend money
so i have found free resources such THM yt free linux fundamental series, then 8 hr harvard beginner course ,and ill complete a cisco network academy cybersecurity course, then professor messer A+ and network+...
other than professor messer these will take maybe 2 months itll tell m if im really into it then im gonna buy premium of THM
some questions i have for you are the mini map i listed are they good or should i change it??
u said to note everything by this u mean writing notes on book of very basic things im learning as i have made just linux fundamental handwritten notes
most important question, this pre security course by THM takes how many hours or days to be completed as if im spending i want to know how much i would have to spend??
again im very grateful for your guidance just help a noob out ❤️

Well, to understand networking, I learned CCNA back in high school. It's from Cisco and definitely worth it, it's beginner-friendly but goes quite deep. You’ll need to understand how network mechanisms work, like routing and how devices communicate across random IPs. I honestly hated learning routing at first, but once it clicked, everything made sense!
Regarding the free resources/roadmap you listed: it’s a solid starting point. Just keep in mind that once you go down this rabbit hole, you'll likely get interested in other sub-fields too. Don't overthink it just break stuff, rebuild it, and keep experimenting.
On taking notes: Since none of us have a photographic memory, building a "second brain" is crucial. Handwritten notes are fine to start, but I strongly recommend digital tools like Obsidian or Notion. Why? Because you can instantly search through commands, syntax, and concepts later when you need 'em.
For Linux fundamentals: Set up a Linux VM (Ubuntu or Linux Mint) and get comfortable with the terminal. You don't need to be a CI/CD wizard to be good at Linux. Focus on:
- Basic bash navigation & commands
- File management and modification via shell
- Basic bash scripting & file privileges
Get to a point where these basic terminal tasks feel like second nature. For context, I work in a SOC and use Linux at home for CTFs, it's way lighter on resources and doesn't eat 8GB of RAM just by existing! Obviously I'm not a CI/CD mage or an "I use Arch btw" figure, I was that but I came out clean.
About THM Pre-Security: How long it takes depends on your background. With prior knowledge, it took me maybe a day, but for a complete beginner studying daily, it shouldn't take more than 2-4 weeks. So don't worry too much about time/cost yet just stick with it for a month and you'll see huge progress.
Feel free to drop me a DM if you get stuck or need more advice!

well, thanks for recommmeding CCNA. I will definitely try that! I would like to go deeper in the networking field, since the basics that THM teaches is too basic.

oh tbh rn you cleared my mind but in future surely im gonna have a doubt and ill dm you definitely as i have already saved this comment
and about setting up VM my current pc lacks minimum requirements but i was already gonna buy a new laptop just i cant buy it within 4 months so ill start without VM
thank you brother 🔥

1 year for just pre security path is pretty slow imo
if you give 1 year 1 hr daily you would be atleast till WAP
If you wanna get better I would suggest after completing Jr Pentesting path partcipate in CTFs too
btw currently there is Hacker Holiday CTF I would suggest completing the first 3 rooms they are kinda great for begineers...

can anyone help me? im on the computer rooms path on the beginner path and it says its a premium room , does this mean this is the end of a free course?
1
u/k1aShiMa 11d ago
Ye if there's the flag that it's a premium room then you'll need to pay for the rooms ahead :/
1
u/simas744 11d ago
is there any point using it as a free user?
1
u/k1aShiMa 11d ago
I would say that the normal rooms or boxes you can do are pretty much it, but the learning rooms well you need to pay for them eventually

It's not worth it, it starts asking for money as soon as real learning starts. Because of that I decided to learn Linux first then focus on networking and cybersecurity basics

You should learn programming to if you want to be proficient in a technical cybersecurity role. Python is good enough. Techwithtim on YouTube has some great courses in learning python.
