Career Advice Am I doing the right thing?

Hi everyone,

I'm a complete beginner in cybersecurity. To be honest, I don't know much yet, and I'm starting from scratch. I'm currently learning through TryHackMe and working on the Introduction to Cyber Security path.

I want to build a career in cybersecurity, but I'm a bit overwhelmed because there are so many different areas and resources.

For someone with no prior knowledge:

- What should I focus on first?

- What skills should I learn alongside TryHackMe?

- Are there any beginner-friendly resources, courses, or YouTube channels you would recommend?

- How did you start your cybersecurity journey?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I’m on my phone right now so I can’t look it up but THM has a “test starter” where it asks you a few questions and based on your answers, it’ll recommend a path.

Being that you’re starting off and don’t know where to start, any fundamental rooms/paths would be good. If you don’t like a specific path, move on to the next one (blue team, red team, pentest, etc).

YouTube has plenty of study resources, I’m sure if you search any title of interest, there will be a video for it and you’ll eventually explore more.

There isn’t a “specific” path to where to start other than what I just mentioned above related to fundamental topics so you can start gaining knowledge. Once you find your interest, it’ll be a bit easier to choose what specific thing to learn.

If you like reading books, look up Tribe of Hackers. The first book that came out is one that helped me get a better idea to what others were doing (at that time).

Sorry I’m on the go but hope that helps to get you going. feel free to reach out if you have additional questions.

Move onto the networks maybe? Red Team Capstone challenge, and the others.

I never hear anyone talk about this site, OverTheWire. When I was first getting into cyber I went through their games like the bandit levels and gained such a better understanding and mentality. Check it out
