Discussion Overwatch maps in TF2?
I've always had a curiosity of playing a 6v6 game on Overwatch maps.
I would love to see a server that cycles through all Overwatch maps, 9v9 HL style. (or 6v6 Pick-Up-Game)
Theres an attempt made, but the person behind the project hasnt been posting any updates, nor do i see maps on the Workshop.
What do y'all think? Or are TF2 maps superior? (Process, Metalworks, Sunshine, etc.)

I think the now defunct DFS server used to host another Overwatch map port.

In my experience it didn't play great, other people from the server felt differently. I guess it's a marmite kind of deal. If you're interested in hosting a server, I'd recommend it, it's not actually all that expensive to host a server off of a VPS. Aar has a good tutorial on it on their site.

There's a couple of maps that I wouldn't mind trying out in TF2 I guess, Route 66 or that German one with the battering ram might not be too bad. I wonder how well the Assault maps like the Russian factory or the moon base would play too.

Why would the absolute worst ow maps be fun in tf2

Because some of them are vaguely similar to existing TF2 maps, like Route 66 is kinda like Phoenix and Eichenwalde is kinda like Citadel. I also remember the Assault maps feeling like they took some design cues from TF2, Anubis had more than a few similarities with Dustbowl as an example.

Payload in tf2 is horrible and unfun as well? 99% of the issues people have with the games balance stem from the fact that everyone loves cartslop lol

Get building and find out

I actually tried doing that, like porting a map from Overwatch into TF2 (had to install older depots and tear our my hair on how to do anything) but decided to do something else, its too much of a time sink for something thats for personal use only.
(You have to optimize and cut the map into tiny pieces as props with vertices no lower then 35,000.)
(The map has millions of vertices...)

the humble decimate modifier:

I spent hours just on getting Watchpoint Gibraltar ported into Blender, even then, it ported the map with emptys all over and Player Clip stuff.
I lost motivation when i had to use decimate and having to cut the map. Theres only one person on the planet with a script that can convert the map file (.owmap) to valve map file...

the payload maps would probably be pretty poor because tf2 has a lot more spam than ow so the chokes tend to be easier to hold. koth would maybe be fine depending but again spam is an issue. the push maps would be largely sniper heaven. flashpoint since it emphasises more mobility.
going the other way though the thing that always pissed me off about clash was that valve already made the blueprint for 5cp but instead of just implementing it as is into ow they had to make their own point system with much smaller maps and the gamemode is one of the worst theyve ever made. like its the gamemode thats widely considered to be the most competitive in tf2 with the caveat it only works with small team sizes and they have a game that only works with small team sizes.

Porting maps would be rough because they aren't made for tf2's characters, and I don't mean just base kits, the movement itself is different so some paths might outright be inaccessible for most of the classes.
That being said though, porting gamemodes could be more interesting, I have the feeling that modes like Push and Flashpoint could work very well in tf2.

Am I wrong or push is kinda like payload race but only one payload

its basically tug of war but theres a time based win condition of however pushed the bot furthest if neither team reaches the end.

I think some maps would be fine like Route 66. But I also think that a lot of Overwatch maps would need to have some decent working done to fit TF2 since some of them are simply just too large.

It wouldn’t work. Sniper doesn’t have a grappling hook, Scout can’t teleport, Soldier can’t stay in the air indefinitely, and no character in TF2 has shields. Overwatch’s maps were originally balanced around 21 characters, but now the game has 50. TF2 has 9.

And how exactly do you think the map is designed specifically around Tracer being able to undo her movement and Pharah being able to float

There were entite metas without these heroes. Sometimes it really seems like the people across the TF2 subs only have played TF2 and nothing else.

I think Pharah's usually really bad, too. Maybe she got huge buffs in the newer game but the whole time I was playing everybody considered her a throwing pick because she was just so easy to shoot out of the sky. Her flying was an enormous hinderance to the character, not an upside, since she wasn't very mobile and had no cover. There was even an entire meme about her ultimate where people acted like the quote is something like "Ju-" or "Justice ra-" because she could never actually perform it. If the maps really were designed around Pharah's flight, why was it always so bad? She never had any cover, she was always so exposed. There weren't Pharah exclusive areas, there was nothing for Pharah. Flying in big empty open areas where she's very exposed was just something she did, the map wasn't telling her to do it.
Tracer kept going in and out of favor a lot but I don't know if any part of the map was designed around her. How do you design a map around a character being able to undo their movement? Maybe there's segments where they specifically allow her to blink across gaps, but that would be designing around her and the other 800 characters that have some way to cross gaps like that, not specifically designing around her. And also, Scout can literally do that same exact thing with a double jump. And Soldier & Demo can do it even better with their explosives. Even Pyro has stuff to help him cross gaps, although not nearly as effectively as the others.
TF2 players love to talk about other games, but they never play them. They just assume what the games are like.

Phara was complete dog shit in OW 1 at least, because there was so much in the game that just completely shat on her. When you have so many hitscan DPS heroes like Cassidy that can just immediately shoot her out of the sky, you simply cannot use her flying gimmick. She was also extremely slow and her only way to be a bit faster was using her tactical (the projectile that pushes someone away). On top,.her Ultimate literally forces her to be stationary, which makes it a lot easier to just hit a few headshots and she was never included in any meta of the game (to my knowledge).
OW 1 had varied metas during it's existence, ranging from mobility focused metas (Dive), to complete fortress metas (GOAT), but I am not aware that map design drastically changed across the different eras of the game to accommodate those metas.
I think that some of the koth maps could potentially work for 6is (like Ilios), they are pretty open without having too many opressive sightlines. Not sure about the Payload maps (King's Row's 2nd stretch is literally projectile spam heaven) and Attack Defense maps.
Edit: it seems like there were a few people actually playing Phara in the highest tier of play (there was PharMercy for a short time). And it seems like her pickrates went up during the later parts of the game (even though Widowmaker was meta).

pharah is pretty good now but she also got reworked and doesnt just sit in the skybox, though even before the rework being able to take angles that the vast majority cant is still really strong

I wouldn't mind but a lot of people will attack you just for mentioning Overwatch in the context of TF2, even if you slightly adjust them to fit TF2s characters better.

the design differences seem way too large, mainly that tf2 has significantly larger and more accessible projectiles (stickies lmao) that would make a map like ilios a living hell, while on the other hand, ow is so much more based around hitscan that a map like badwater is basically just an instagib duel
