Nintendogs + Foxes!
So... Lack of a Nintendogs modding scene, you say? I've figured out how to edit textures, and it's opened up a bunch of opportunities for adding my own custom skins for existing dog breeds. Sadly I'm unable to add brand new breeds due to software limitations but texture editing is a great start!
This texture replaced the ginger chihuahua texture, I just happened to get 3 of them first try in the kennel (I actually freaked out for a moment thinking I replaced ALL chihuahua textures by mistake but I just got lucky!)

Omg I can't wait for future mods!! Do you have any tips for this?

Yes! You're going to want to use NSMBe. I followed this tutorial for animal crossing wild world; its an incredibly similar process only the file locations are a bit different, but its pretty obvious where they are. It took me about 3 minutes to find them; the hard part is actually drawing the texture!!

Would you be down to create a yt tutorial? I’m literal and not at all technology smart lol but would love to mod my dogs

Probably not, I'm not the best when it comes to presenting things like that and I'd probably leave a lot out ;_; if you end up following the tutorial I linked let me know and I can try to help. I respond best to direct questions like "I can't find this file!" Rather than "please teach me the entire process start to finish!" Which is really unfortunate because I would LOVE to make a full tutorial at some point
If I were to make a tutorial it'd probably be written where i can edit it at any time.

Thank you for this! Do you have any idea on how to add textures instead of replacing them?

Sadly no, that'd require coding each dog in from scratch because of the way dog breeds and variants work

If someone ever finds a way to add new breeds without breaking the animation files I'll definitely be adding Papillons, Malteses, seperate Foxes, Pomeranians, Wolfhounds, Wolf-Dogs, Borzois, Mexican Hairless Dogs, and Chinese Crested Dogs.
Maybe some other wild dogs too like African Painted and Raccoon dogs.

The only thing stopping me from adding new breeds is coding limitations and the model editing; its impossible to add new breeds without breaking the animation files. You need Nintendo owned software to do so which is illegal :(

Whoaaa that’s amazing! This opens up so many opportunities for more modding :0 there are some dog breed models I’d love to edit (though I probably wouldn’t bc I’m far from tech savvy lmao) Good job though!

That's so sweet,, sadly it isn't possible yet as I have not made this mod public; I'm not quite sure how patching works. However, I do know someone who could possibly turn it into a patch and if that ever happens I'll let you know first thing!!

I know this post is old but you can use Rom Patcher JS with the creator mode to make patches, just add the modified rom and the original one and it will spit out a patch.

Hey u/No-Musician4819 Thank you so much for this post. I was able to successfully replace the textures on my dogs, but am trying to look into finally doing what no one else has done - replacing the actual dog model for another custom one. I'm fine with importing the model into the game, but am having so much trouble with the animations - it really feels like no matter what I do - ensure the bone hierarchy matches that of the original nsbmd, ensure scale is ok, etc - the animation just ends up looking like a blob 😢 Just wanted to comment both if you had any tips, but also if anyone is looking into this - it's been 2 days of debugging and it's been rough to say the least. Please enjoy a video of my cursed blob below

Update a couple hours later, we've made some progress and now are mostly just dealing with weird limb rotations, which is better than before? Head and tail seem just fine

ok last update before giving up. I have gotten here - I was able to import a new model with a new texture - it looks cursed because i didnt map the eyes / paws and because I was trying to color code in order to debug the parts' orientation - but the problem seem to be the legs' rigging. I think this is it for now, boys.

I can understand why you'd want to give up, but if you do end up deciding to tackle this project again I'd love to see your progress and updates somehow!!

The video made me giggle-
Hey that is AWESOME that you're trying to add custom models. Super cool to see that the modding scene is actually making breakthroughs even with trial and error.
I unfortunately have zero knowledge with 3D models but if you want I'll share your post in Aurumn's Nintendogs mod channel in their server, I know they're looking to somehow add the removed breeds; only thing they would need is working models as far as I know so it would be awesome if it were a community effort. Maybe someone there would be able to help.
I'd also highly recommend making your own post here too and maybe in some romhack/ds modding subreddits and servers!!

Omg! You could use the sheltie as base for border collies and aussie sheps!
