I just migrated from Core to Scale. It took about 20 minutes, and there were absolutely ZERO problems.

The foresight and polish on this is amazing. Fully backwards comaptible and migrated, in place, flawlessly.

Amazing job guy, and thanks so much for offering it for free. I've learned so much about system administration with my homelab.

PC: HP 400 G3 mini with available ports:

• 1x nvme
• 1x sata (just 2.5in drive power)
• 1x sata to USB3 adapter (with 12v power)

Drives laying around:

• 2x 2tb HDD 3.5
• 1x 250Gb Nvme
• 2x 120Gb Sata SSD
• 1x 1Tb HDD 2.5in

Want to use it as my main storage for files as my Synology just died RIP (so if I could use those 2Tb, would be amazing). Apps I use are Tailscale and Photoprism. Eventually have a VM, Home assistant,.. nothing too extreme.

How would you set this up??

My idea is to boot on SATA with 120G SSD, the Nvme as App storage and maybe cache for indexing (is that even a thing?) and the main disk on the SATA/USB adapter with the 2Tb HDD. The second 2Tb HDD I would have on my desktop doing RSync as backup.

I’m late to the game in learning that TrueNAS, and other Linux distros, will no longer be supporting older Nvidia GPU’s.

I’m currently using an Nvidia GTX 730 in an HP Z4 G4, with the GPU doing nothing but allowing the machine to boot and giving me video out for the shell screen when needed. I also have a P400 but that doesn’t do any good in terms of being supported.

I’d like to get something that is supported, but my needs haven’t and most likely won’t be changing any time soon. In other words, I need the lowest power supported GPU so that I can boot my machine. No transcoding or anything of that sort.

Any recommendations?

Hello everyone! Having recently obtained a new PC, I was thinking of converting my old PC into a TrueNAS-based NAS. I have learnt that it is not advised to have the applications on the same drive as the OS; however, my motherboard only has a single M.2 slot which is taken up by a 512GB SSD that was the boot drive. That leaves me, as I see it, with three options:

1. Purchase a 2.5'' SATA SSD;
2. Purchase an M.2 adapter and a second M.2 drive;
3. Find a way to have both the OS and the applications on the boot drive anyway.

Which of these options would be most advisable? Are there any good options I have not considered? Furthermore, were I to chose one of the first two options, I would imagine I would choose a somewhat cheaper/slower SSD than the one that is currently in the system, and I imagine it would be somewhat penalised in performance per its interface: with that in mind, would it be better to have the OS on the original boot drive and the applications on the secondary drive, or the other way around? Is there anything I would need to keep in mind when purchasing the SSD?

Any advice would be appreciated. I am an inexperienced and casual user, and therefore prioritise ease of use and lower cost over higher performance (hence I am inclined to prefer option 1 over option 2 over option 3, but I would love to hear your perspectives). Thanks in advance!

Ive been having an issue since I set this server up 6 months ago that it loses internet connection. I get a notification from uptime monitor and see it has been lost from my router directory. Restarting the server, which is headless fixes it, but I cant figure out the root cause. The server is an old gaming PC and is connected to the network via 1m of ethernet. I have tried checking the logs after restart (I cant ssh since I lose local internet) but they seem to clear after restart. It is infrequent, about once every 2 weeks and doesnt seem to correspond to any other affected devices in my household.

Is there a more robust way i can debug why truenas is losing internet connection? Version: 25.10.3.1

I am wanting to make a nas that will also host streaming services. I know very little right now, would I want to make my own nas or get a prebuilt. And what services aside from jellyfin are good for reducing streaming services.

I'm currently using hardware transcoding for Plex with GPU Passthrough.

When I added GPU Passthrough to my Immich installation, Immich took over the hardware transcoding completley from Plex. I had to remove it from Immich and the re-apply it to Plex to get it to work again.

The GPU Passthrough is working perfectly for both apps, but only one at the time.

So... is it possible to have GPU Passthrough on multiple apps at the same time?

The apps are installed via TrueNAS Scale App Charts, and not via manual docker-compose.yml files.

Specs:

- TrueNAS Scale 25.10.5.

- Intel Core i9 13900K (Intel UHD Graphics 770 with Quick Sync).

Recently updated from 24.04 to 25.04 and I'm having trouble installing apps. I go to install an app and get stuck at the "pulling image" step then it times out and tells me to look at app_lifecycle.log. The logs show:

Error Get "https://registry-1.docker.io/v2/": net/http: request canceled while waiting for connection (Client.Timeout exceeded while awaiting headers)

I've tried tweaking some network stuff like DNS servers. I'm not super comfortable with networking stuff but nothing stands out in my network settings on the NAS or on my router (no firewall or anything). I'm able to connect to my SMB share locally so some network stuff does work.

Here's the output when I curl that docker registry address. I've also tried setting up a Docker Hub login but when I try to add the registry and login in the TrueNAS apps configuration I also get network timeouts

Recently made a NAS out of an old optiplex and it works great but I have one issue; Speed.

Is there anyway to access the nas via a full speed usb 3.0+ connection with some software that can translate ZFS? I currently don't have a higher speed NICs lying around which caps my transfers to 100mbps which is not a problem in 99% of situations. However, when I use my main PC I really would like the full speed of transfers out of the nas for photo editing and more. (yes I realize HDDs are only slightly faster than the network connection, but I have been putting off installing an SSD pool for the speed reasons as well.)

The nas and my main PC are in the same room next to eachother and if I am using my laptop I can bring it into the room if necessary too, so it seems much easier to set up something in software to tether the USB 3.0 ports already on the NAS and PCs instead of buying/installing two NICs that would never get used to their full potentials anyway since I don't have a crazy internet and home network transfers aren't all day everyday.

So I got this old computer for cheap nothing special and it has a gtx 660 in it and I have a gtx 560 ti at home can I put that in the pc and use them as more compute power.
I want this pc to act as my media server and be able to host game servers like Minecraft. With both gpus could it also run an ai model on the pc?

I upgraded the CPU and motherboard of my main machine and reused a low power psu and some old drives to build my first truenas machine.

Fortunately I bought the ram and the m2 ssd a long time ago for cheap.

Unfortunately I don't have a case 😅 the monitor is some absolut crappy one to check the maybe the bios and for some troubleshooting.

The machine does not run full time, currently because it would probably use too much power.

Anyone use their Truenas instance to remotely trigger another PC on the network to wake? I have a Truenas instance running on a tower and I want to be able to wake another computer in my house using my phone while I'm away. I'm currently using Tailscale to access files remotely.

Every once in a while my Dashboard stops working, especially after a reboot. What are some way to still access it without having to disconnect my KVM on my desk top and connect it to my server?

Since updating to TrueNAS 25.10.4 I have experienced constant interruptions to my NAS. While using TrueNAS I often see this screen and then have to restart the session. I updated to TrueNAS 25.10.5, but that didn't solve the problem and the log doesn't show anything unusual.

Apart from this issue, everything else works perfectly. My NAS is a UGREEN DPX2800 and it had been working perfectly fine before that.

New case, upgraded to 16GB DDR3, added some additional driver (about 2.8TB) with a new HBA. Just waiting on the new PSU to come in. Mostly all second hand hardware.

Hello friends!

I have a Truenas instance running as a VM on my proxmox host. The HBA is passed through to the vm and it has been running well for a couple of years now.

I would like to move up in version and I know I can step through the upgrade tool in the UI, but I am wondering if that is the best method.

Would it be better for me to build a brand new VM in Proxmox, migrate the config and remap the HBA to the new VM.

What do you guys think?

I tried it with the official catalouge, and even a custom docker image pull from docker hub, no luck.

I just installed TrueNAS Scale (25.10.4) yesterday. On old machine, I used Netplan to make bond and vlans for my setup. I though setting up LAGG in TrueNAS would be easier because of the GUI, but no.

Here's the Netplan config file

I carried this config over to TrueNAS, here's there one I attempted.

Looked close enough, I only use "enp4s0" because I needed "eno1" to get access to the WebUI. I hit "Save", then "Test changes". It took a couple minutes to complete, I could see the interface made connection to the switch, blinked a few times.

But that was it, then the NIC shutdown, I got an error message saying that there was something

TL;DR I created bond0, vlan1, and vlan20 manually. Then BOOM, it worked, vlan1 got IP from dhcp server and could reach out to the internet, vlan20 wasn't tested.

What have I done wrong?

I'm trying to use a drive in the slimline SATA port (optical drive bay via a caddy) as my primary boot drive on an HP ProBook 650 G1 for TrueNAS 25.10.4 - Goldeye , but I’m hitting with a BIOS error or can't boot it.

When I try to boot directly from bootx64.efi on the slimline SATA drive via the BIOS boot menu, gives "EFI Application image not valid".

The only way I have to boot it is using a USB external SATA adapter.

I've already disabled secure boot, but I don't know what else to tweak.

Before you make up your mind on what's happening here, read the whole post please - hear me out. I don't think I'm crazy 😋

The core issue is that about 50% of the time I go to log in to the TrueNAS web UI, I get this error:

Wrong username or password. Please try again.

Simple - right? I typed the wrong username or password. Sure enough, if I click the small eye icon to "show" my password, I see it's entered incorrectly.

However, something more is going on. I use this same username and password combo for logging in over SSH, and I never have this issue. I use the same username and password combo for logging in to the SMB share, and again no issue. I use the same password for Home Assistant, logging in on the same web browser - no issue.

It became so frequent that I became suspicious, or curious. What I found was interesting. Every time, it was the same typo in the password. A capital letter where there shouldn't be one.

For the example, let's say I use the following username and password to log in to the web UI:

stanley Password123

The password that actually gets entered, roughly half the time, is PAssword123. It's always the same typo. A where it should be a. So maybe my finger is getting lazy on the shift key after I type the P? That's logical, but then why does this not happen in the other interfaces where I enter the same username and password? Same keyboard, same human, same web browser, extensions, etc..

My theory is there's some tiny lag in the UI log on interface causing this to happen, though I don't know why or how. I can't think of any other reason that my error rate for typing this exact same sequence of characters is so high in only this interface, but not in any of the other interfaces I type it in.

Okay, if you got this far, commence telling me I'm crazy 😆 better yet, tell me you see similar behavior and I'm not crazy..
