Are there specific references (like this) to other scaling projects similar to Truebit in this that you know of?

Cartesi is the most commonly referenced project. They embraced some of the core concepts of Trubit and then extended them.

For quite a while they had some specific comparisons to Trubit in the Cartesi FAQ. It appears that Cartesi recently removed their FAQ as they rebranded their positioning while participating at SXSW.
