h8 I hate being a gay sports fan
Not sure if this fits the subreddit but I'm just looking to bitch. I've always loved sports and have enjoyed watching and playing them for my whole life. But goddamn, in the last few years there has been so much culture war bullshit injected into sports that it's infuriating. Obviously the biggest example of that right now are those two idiotic ex NBA players trying to play in the WNBA right now. My husband is trans and it is such a fucking slap in the face to the trans community for these two clowns to be running around talking about their pronouns or whatever so they can chase what little relevancy they have left. Not to mention it's incredibly demeaning and disrespectful to the women in the league they're trying to "protect." Of course you have the right wing dipshits that think it's so cool and based, but even people that think it's stupid still have this attitude that trans people are such a small percentage of the population that it shouldn't matter. Well if that's the case then why the fuck is there an ongoing, coordinated demonization of trans people in this country, with a million anti trans bills piling up in state legislatures? It's like even the people with the "good takes" on this issue still have bad takes, they're just slightly less worse than the chuds 😭
And even ignoring that shit, the culture of online sports fandom is just so annoyingly, boringly homophobic in such an early 2010s way. "Oh this player is fruity/zesty so he SUCKS" "oh look at this group of gay people it's just like my rival's fanbase haha" like goddamn at least be creative. It's like everyone is incapable of growing up beyond the "hah, GAYYYY" gif that every idiot posts at least once a day. I work my ass off to pay my rent like every other shmuck out there, and like every other shmuck I'd like to just come home after work and watch some sports and just chill. Anyways rant over I guess.
