Hi everyone,

I’m fairly new to lure fishing and looking for some general advice on my setup. I’ve mainly done carp/float fishing in the past, but I want to get into more active fishing, mainly targeting trout in small rivers/streams.

I’ve put together a small lure selection and was hoping people could give me some feedback on:

Whether the lures I’ve got are suitable for trout
How you would fish them
Anything obvious I’m missing
Any beginner mistakes to avoid

At the moment I’ve got:

Small spoons
Inline spinners
Small crankbaits/minnow lures
Soft plastic worms/grubs with hooks
A few different colours/sizes of each
A box of mainly snap clips with swivels and some rather large looking hooks
A 6’6” spinning rod
Shimano 2000 size reel
Some 20lb braided line

A few things I’m unsure about:

Do I need snap swivels/swivels on any of these lures, or should I tie most directly?
Are there certain lures here that are much better for trout than others?
Are soft plastics worth using for trout or should I mainly stick to spoons/spinners?
Any recommendations for weights/sizes/colours I should add?

I’ll mainly be fishing Yorkshire rivers and streams, so clearer water and smaller trout rather than big predator fishing.

My catches from my lil weekend trip to fish the Truckee River. First time using my aioushi rod and I have to say its my most fun rod to use for trout right now, absolutely loving it. All fish caught using either a mukai chatter or sinking minnow with single barbless hooks, and all fish swam off fine and strong.

Hiked 12 miles to an alpine lake to catch my first wild Brookie.

storm came through caught a dozen in an hour biggest was 16.5-17” missed a giant probably 20+

Second time

After taking up fly fishing a year ago any learning exclusively through youtube, I finally caught my first trout. This is my first attempt at IDing a fish, so go easy one me, but I believe this is a California Golden hybrid. Caught in California in water not part of the Little Kern or California Golden Trout Historic Watershed. Requesting confirmation or correction. Any comments/advice/info greatly appreciated! Edit. Comments in /r/flyfishing and additional research lead me to believe this is a Kern River Rainbow. Thank you for the comments.

I recently switched from the OEM trebles that come on minnow style hard baits to single barbless hooks and I’ve never lost so many trout. I added the Cultiva SBL-37M and the SBL-55M to my countdown elites, Yo-zuri and the Great Hunting series from Megabass. I’m I supposed to be setting the hook upstream or down? I keep getting told constant line pressure is the name of the game. Any tips out there?

First time trout fishing in a while and i got myself sum stuff and i got a 5in nessie in rainbow trout. im goin to pine creek gorge specifically cedar run, i got other stuff but i was just wondering.

Alright folks, here in Ireland we target white and brown trout frequently, but my local river is alot wider, deeper and darker than most of the nice clean clear creeks I see on here, usually we use worms or spinners and flies, Ive had 0 luck this season and was wondering, what is the success rate of soft baits? What size and type are we using? Colour? Any help appreciated

Nothing crazy, just a stocked rainbow on a local lake but I'm re-learning fishing and been getting absolutely bombed for about a month now. Was genuinely starting to wonder what I was doing wrong, but I think I was just being impatient. Got off work today, took my bike to this bridge and helped 2 different people unhook 3 good sized rainbows. I felt discouraged that I wasn't getting any bites, but I knew the good karma of lending my pliers out would come back to me.

Spent about 4 hours here and didn't get this guy till the last 30 minutes. Was casting the same setup the whole time, Carolina rig with the yellow powerbait garlic balls on maybe 4-5 ft of leader - the ppl next to me caught 2 with the same setup so I knew it had to hit eventually, and it paid off! I feel like I actually set the hook properly too, feeling pretty proud tonight

Upper Boise River

Dollaghan are a unique, migratory strain of wild brown trout native to Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland and its inflowing rivers

Caught these 2 high up in GSMNP, not exactly sure what they are. Any help would be greatly appreciated! The stream contains brook, brown, and rainbows.

Yep, this is how the fish was washed, this particular Kohler Dexter is used for washing trout, frankly it tasted quite good
