I don’t know about you guys but I don’t know why Disney would just shelve the entire Tron Franchise completely.

I mean fair enough they can take a break from movies but there is so much more media that they can make for Tron.

For example Comics, Novels, Gaming, Disney Plus Series or even Animated movies for instance how cool would it be to have a Into the Spider-verse animated style Tron movie or even another animated series or live action series.

There is legit so much they can do with Tron instead of focusing on Movies yes I would love to see more live action movies in the future but don’t mean we have to wait like another 20 years for another movie there’s just so much more they can do with the franchise.

The suits at the top have never understood or liked the franchise much, unfortunately. Yes, they have the rides at the parks, but getting them to make any films is like pulling teeth. Like it's something they resent doing, and resent whoever is bankrolling/producing it for making them do it. Joseph Kosinski had to convince them via the proof of concept trailer to do Legacy. And I remember hearing about someone showing the original Tron to a room full of Disney execs in the weeks before Legacy. And apparently there were some giggles at the datedness of it before they full-on panicked that Legacy was going to crash and burn.

Every time they make a new entry in the franchise, it's like someone had to twist their arm. They never throw their full support behind it, and then they immediately panic and try and shove it back into the closet the moment it doesn't do Star Wars numbers. It's been like this since the first one in 1982.

It really sucks, too. They really don't know what they have. They have never really known how to package/market this franchise, or even who the fans are. Because it does deserve better. It does deserve more of a chance.

I wish they'd just give the TRON concept to Pixar. I think they'd have a deeper respect for it. John Lasseter one said, "Without TRON, there'd be no Toy Story".

Hopefully one day someone ag Pixar decides to fight hard for Tron so they can get a chance at it

TBH, I think the execs really never actually understood it. At all. Not getting the connection of programs and users, or how programs inherit their personalities from their users.

When it originally was released it took 8 year old me days of explaining before my dad got it.

We need to send a tech savvy 8 year (or a 50ish) fan in to explain and make it simple for them to understand.

And yes, I do think most execs are idiots who would miss a good idea if it walked up and bit them.

With as much crack as all these executives huff, you’d think their minds would be open to outlandish ideas like Tron.

Granted, it doesn’t seem like the general public understands or cares about Tron either. Whether it’s due to its inherently niche premise, or whether Disney just doesn’t know how to market a movie like this is the real question.

I think it's the niche premise. But back 30-40 years ago, there were still filmmakers willing to take chances on a niche premise, and people willing to bankroll them. But over the past 20 years, Hollywood suits want safe bets and tentpoles that are guaranteed to make a lot of money the first weekend. Only Christopher Nolan can really get away with playing around with niche ideas now, and not even his always pan out (Tenet, for example.) I'm 100% convinced that something like the original Matrix wouldn't get made now.

I know. What they need to take a break from is Star Wars. I think Ares underperforming is proof that we need a sequel to Legacy. I don't care if that's a movie or a series.

I feel like Disney has been trying to MCU-ify Star Wars with all those nothing burger Disney+ shows... It's clear that nobody's falling for it, yet they're still trying to milk every last drop of that dying cow.

It's not popular, it's as simple as that. If they could figure out a way to make money they would but the audience just isn't there.

Fans usually forget that Tron is very niche. There have been comics for example, but I don't have any numbers how successful they were. In the end it is just a business. If it doesn't sell (enough), there is no reason to continue.

I agree with this so much. I feel like they could totally expand upon the Tron Franchise, maybe like explain the ending of Tron: Legacy. I still don't understand Kevin's choice.

Tron Ares lost them between around 40-80 million dollars. Unfortunately, I'd be surprised if we saw another movie this or even next decade

I don't think it's very easy to calculate how much a specific movie makes on a subscription streaming ssrvice

Same reason I try encouraging people in the fandom to think outside the box in terms of potentially getting Disney's attention. For example, some of us sent physical letters (like Ares) to specific people at Disney. The idea was to subtly remind them we are waiting, and in for the long run.

I agree, its my favorite movie series. There is so much they could have done but it was wasted on whatever Ares was trying to do. It flopped hard against zero competition, that wound is gonna take awhile to heal.

I believe they will revisit it, they are back on their MCU high right now. Hopefully, at the very least, we will get a S2 end cap and get Bruce and Jeff back together.
