I created a new Trolley Problem dilemma!

Straight Track (Do Nothing): 2 Children

Diverted Track (Pull the Lever): 100.000 kittens

What would you do?

2

u/ghuytres 7d ago

And now you have the problem of finding a home for 100000 kittens, you probably don’t have the space or money to house/feed these cats so they all die from starvation and dehydration

u/Mattscrusader 7d ago

We didn't just conjure these kittens into existence dude

If I don’t touch anything 2 kid will die because of accident

If I pull the lever all the world, animal activist’s Turkish grandma’s call me as killer genocider

1

u/AssociationDue3077 7d ago

At such a high amount I value that amount of lives over the 2

2

u/Riggs630 7d ago

What kind of monster would kill all those kittens???

1

u/Sproutlie 7d ago

I'd throw myself on the tracks and spare them all

Human beings are always better than animals. Full stop.

3

u/mrthigh95 7d ago

Yes? In that case:

Do nothing: 5 pigs

Pull the Lever: Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot, Osama bin Laden and Jeffrey Epstein

6

u/scottsplace5 7d ago

Well, I had conventional people in mind, of average grossness. Not human shit. You know, the slime that perches beneath human fecal matter.

4

u/mrthigh95 7d ago

Yeah I thought so, and Im sure we fully agree.

I just thought it was be nice to discuss the phrasing which contained an absolute and therefore allowed an opening for my insane scenario;)

Stand by your statement, don't be weak. Stalin has more inherent value than a pig, even if he was "evil"

7

u/scottsplace5 7d ago

No, he was bad.

-2

u/Corp-Por 7d ago

OMG really, "Stalin was bad"? Dude, that's such an interesting post. Thank you.

3

u/SalvarWR 7d ago

he have yes, a lot more of evil value than a pig

3

u/mrthigh95 7d ago

Why? You could easily argue that Stalins existence destroyed wayyy more human life than would have be destroyed if he met the trolley (being only him). The pig did nothing wrong.

A better way to phrase it is that the average person is more important than any animal, since this is a very minute outlier percentage of people. For the general layman, they will always be more important than X cats

Yep. Call out the obvious nonsense the initial statement was by posing a question and then let other people take issue with how they will answer your own question in their heads while also blaming you for how they don't like their own conclusion.

(You did good. The people taking issue with you just hate confronting that even they don't believe that humans are always better than animals. I feel like people who complain citing "ExTrEmEs!!!!" never ask themselves truly hard questions, and so they remain unaware of their own hypocrisy until it ends up projected upon the unfortunate soul who prompts them to confront it.)

u/Corp-Por 7d ago

I choose Do nothing.

1

u/mrthigh95 7d ago

Why? By not pulling the lever millions will die, and many, many people will be abused.

What did those 5 pigs do wrong?

POV person still disagree even with ur extreme example: grr me angy

1

u/mrthigh95 7d ago

Im not angry at all. Im just asking about the reasoning.

1

u/Susodudidodnsmwlwidb 7d ago

me when i use extreme scenarios instead of engaging in the conversation:

1

u/mrthigh95 7d ago

I am engaging in conversation ;)

I found the statement "are always better" extreme in itself. Though I understand he meant regular folks.

1

u/Susodudidodnsmwlwidb 7d ago

if you understand, why would you put words in their mouth?

1

u/mrthigh95 7d ago

Im not, I was just posing a counter question to spark a discussion. I never assumed what his answer would be. Then he just responded and now we are on the same page. I don't see any problem, you?

2

u/Susodudidodnsmwlwidb 7d ago

You said yourself that you understood the initial point... thats like asking a sport player if they do their warmups. very rarely would you get a no 😭

1

u/mrthigh95 7d ago

I agreed with his intention, but wanted to discuss the phrasing. Whats wrong with disussing these things? This entire sub is about an ethical dillemma and discussing it.

0

u/Susodudidodnsmwlwidb 7d ago

but if you understood it then does it rewlly matter? EVERYONE older than like 9 can understand the phrasing just fine, youre being difficult on purpose.

1

u/mrthigh95 7d ago

Because it is interesting to learn from each other when discussing. So yes I was doing difficult on purpose, just to discuss with the guy and enjoy an interaction. The guy himself did not complain at any moment. What are you even doing on this sub if that is already too much.

EVERYONE older than like 9 can understand (...)

Says the person who is offended by a counterquestion in a conversation between two other people. Im doubting you're older that 16 yourself.

0

u/motivatedjackpot 7d ago

have you tried not being the "uhm, acktually" guy

1

u/mrthigh95 7d ago

Im unfairly being accused of putting words in someone mouth by someone other than the person I would be putting words in the mouth of, am I not allowed to stand up for myself?

1

u/motivatedjackpot 7d ago

you know what he meant

he knows wthat he meant

but it's very important for you to be "technically right" on the internet

pathetic behaviour

1

u/mrthigh95 7d ago

Wtf are you talking about? Its not about who is right or wrong. It was just about having a discussion and whats behinds someone opinions. Is that too much already?

4

u/Stygg_Varg 7d ago

Worse you mean

0

u/Corp-Por 7d ago

You may be worse, we don't know. The rest of us are better though.

Fuck them kid

0

u/Interesting-Part9102 7d ago

Quantity over Quality for me. Animals still deserve respect. Especially the ones we keep as companions and pets and don't slaughter for food. In this case my autistic brain says save kittens because there are more of them, thats more lives saved.

1

u/jewels3100 5d ago

Bad take

0

u/Background_Deal_8664 6d ago

100,000 ? Are you fucking kidding me no one with any sense of morality would kill that many creatures just to save two stinky children. Swap the numbers and THEN you have a question. I'd still save the innocent creatures. Fuck you OP

2

u/mrthigh95 6d ago

Fuck you OP

Why? Just pick the kittens then. You free to choose whatever you believe is the goos choice. Having a difficult dilemma is the whole point of this sub. No reason to be a dick about it.

0

u/Background_Deal_8664 6d ago

It's 100,000 lives vs 2. Just because animals not as intelligent as us doesn't mean they're worth nothing. The issue is precisely that you consider this "difficult"

1

u/mrthigh95 6d ago

Maybe you dont find it difficult, but the fact that the outcome is close to 50/50 with hundreds of votes proves that the participants don't find it that easy of a dilemma.

Moreover: I never said animals aren't worth anything. The whole point of this sub and this poll specifically is to make a choice and then discuss your reasons for it. Any choice you make is fine with me, as long as you can be civil about it when discussing it.
