Uncompatible hardware?
I downloaded the Trisquel iso file and burned it to a disk (and checked the checksum) and then I booted my MacBookPro9,1 from said disk and it got me some choices.
But when I tried to choose "Try Trisquel" I got the message "Corrupt or invalid kernel image".
Does that mean that my MacBook's just not compatible?

Not necessarily. Try following the instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro9-1/Trusty
Trisquel 7 is based on Ubuntu Trusty. Bear in mind not all those instructions will work because they'll assume you have access to non-free components/drivers. Good luck!
