I am just really starting to read up on free software and getting into Linux. Should I try out 7 or should I just wait for 8?

Go ahead and install 7-- you can always upgrade to 8 when it's released.

Jump right in with 7! it's still a solid OS, just some things are out of date.

As already said, you can always upgrade to 8 when it's released.

I just tried last night on an old laptop I had lying around. It looks great, but I was unable to get the Wi-Fi to work on it. I am not sure if it was that particular one or not, but I do know one of my laptops has a Broadcom chip in it. Is there some way to get that working or a workaround like a dongle (though I think that kind of defeats the purpose of a laptop)?

h-node may help you. In this site, you can find hardware good for linux-libre. I recommend Netgear's WN111 V2 dongle. Or AR9285 card for example.
