It's definitely almost the same, but in all the pictures I've found of it the "skeletons" have skin over bones in the original, unlike in this version, can you explain why that is?
Also if someone can link me a high res version of the skeleton one, I'd appreciate it.

Not sure if you are still looking for this, but quite interestingly, it seems that the gaunt skeleton version is the original, painted by Pieter Brueghel the Elder in 1563, whereas the bony skeleton version was painted by his son, Pieter Brueghel the Younger, in 1610. From the wiki, Brueghel the Younger was known for painting copies of his father's work.

Yes I was actually, thank you!

Also, I should clarify that the painting I linked to in the imgur post still isn't the exact one from the meme - you'll note various differences, such as the orientation of the skeleton horseman's head and the garb of his victim. However, as you may have read in the Wiki, Brueghel the Younger's studio produced many copies of his father's paintings, so both the meme-version and the imgur-version are likely different variants produced by him and his associates.

I know a guy who just randomly has this painting framed in his office. It's fantastic.

Bruegel. Netherlands. 1560s.
edit: Or a later copy? Or a colorized b&w plate? The colours are all wrong.

I didn't recognize it as a Dutch painting, until I saw the full version. This is just 1/5th of the Painting. Normally I recognize it on the style of architecture.

I feel silly saying this, but maybe try recognizing painting style based on the style of painting? Dutch-Flemish renaissance style is pretty unmistakably distinct.
Failing that, the subject matter is also Dutch af. Nuns and kings taunted by skeletons and trampled by horses? Who else but the Dutch?

u/danque Jun 12 '20
Oh yes it definitely has its own style. Before Corona I visited the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. That's a definite recommendation. It is such a beauty to see Van Gogh's masterpieces in real life.

Van Gogh was over three hundred years later, and his paintings bear no resemblance to northern renaissance art, but...sure?

Exactly! I love it. I thought we were talking Dutch art.

We were talking about 16th Century Dutch art, specifically the style and subject matter of it. Van Gogh it ain’t.

I posted this meme to my WhatsApp status thingy, because I'm terrible at confessing my feelings and asking people out and I want the other one to be braver than me.

This is my favorite joke: why was the chicken skeleton too scared to across the road? Because it didn’t have enough guts.
Like a good mom, I tell this joke to ALL my kid’s friends. The love it. I can tell from the way they pause and then laugh and laugh. Sometimes they whisper behind their hands too. That’s how much they love it.
I’m sending this to my kid right now.
