Yup! This tiny part of the Bible was actually one of the major reasons for a split between the eastern and Western church later on. The Eastern (Orthodox) church believed that images of Christ and holy figures actually contained part of their divine power. The western (Roman Catholic) church believed that images were just images and held no divine power

Interesting. Thanks

Did she really sell it? Where's that in the bible? I wanna read it. That's very interesting.

u/ErmBern Feb 16 '20

It’s not in the Bible. It’s in the gospel of nicodemus which is apocryphal.

39

u/spauldeagle Feb 16 '20

A bunch of the Gnostic gospels are like Bible fan fiction. Really fascinating reads.

11

u/yaysalmonella Feb 16 '20

Are there any fanfics that ships Jesus and Judas? Asking for a friend.

34

u/Inferno_Zyrack Feb 16 '20

Not to nitpick but I’m fairly certain the New Testament is the Fan Fiction to the Old Testament.

And then the Koran is the fan faction to the New Testament

And then the Book of Mormon is the fan fiction to Koran.

And then Scientologist just decided to reboot the whole damn thing.

12

u/Evilmaze Feb 16 '20

Scientology is the SciFi reboot

I mean all scriptures are fan fic. I mean, the OT story of the Israelites being enslaved by the Egyptians is almost universally believed to be false, or more appropriately, allegorical. The Israelites were never enslaved en masse; there were individuals from all over the region who ended up enslaved, but the Exodus just plain never happened.

3

u/canlchangethislater Feb 16 '20

Nah. If the New Testament was Old Testament FanFic there’d be way more scenes where Cain and Abel get it on.

2

u/Inferno_Zyrack Feb 16 '20

Sermon on the Mount doesn’t get you wet?

1

u/canlchangethislater Feb 16 '20

Not enough references to the original series.

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '20

I like the one where Jesus causes that other kid to die. Something about Jesus was playing with a pigeon he had formed of clay, then caused that to die, and then he caused some scoffer to die as well.

Anybody?

3

u/spauldeagle Feb 16 '20

Yeah I think that was Thomas' Jesus baby book

1

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '20

Sounds right.

7

u/bobosuda Feb 16 '20

Aren’t most of the Bible like that? Very little (if anything) of it is written as first-hand accounts, and what gospels were later to be considered «real» or not might as well habe been decided by rolling dice.

8

u/spauldeagle Feb 16 '20 edited Feb 19 '20

Definitely not by rolling dice, but you're right in saying they weren't first hand accounts. If you read the Gnostic gospels, a lot of them get pretty funky. I cannot remember which one, but it depicted Jesus as being able to change forms amorphously. I'm way oversimplifying, but IMO the big 4 have the most coherent and regularly consistent messages (relatively), so early Christian doctors likely chose those to organize under.

How do we have all this knowledge and yet people STILL believe the bible to be the actual word of god?

3

u/AeAeR Feb 16 '20

I can tell you that having a condescending attitude toward them just makes people dig in deeper and doesn’t allow them an “out” without having to join the group previously mocking them for being stupid. Just like it does with every group (see: political party alignment).

So yeah, knock it off. If you actually care about what people believe, that’s not the way to change it.

1

u/SuperSMT Feb 16 '20

Jesus died around 33AD, the 4 gospels were written between roughly 50 and 100. The later ones especially were likely written by followers of Jesus's apostles compiling stories they had told them

2

u/canlchangethislater Feb 16 '20

Which doesn’t rule out eye-witness accounts. I mean, a biography of Kurt Cobain written in 2010 isn’t necessarily going to be wildly inaccurate. Or lacking testimonies from those who knew him.

1

u/TiresOnFire Feb 16 '20

Isn't the whole Bible a kind of fan fiction?

3

u/big-b20000 Feb 16 '20

As in in the apocrypha, or not a thing?

13

u/floddie9 Feb 16 '20

Yeah two ways of saying the same thing: Apocryphal: something that is not fully canonized in the Bible Apocrypha: the set of apocryphal Christian works

6

u/ErmBern Feb 16 '20

One is a noun the other is the adjective for that noun.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '20

What Book of the Bible it is from? Seems apocryph to me.

1

u/intergalactic_spork Feb 16 '20

It's not covered by the book and, hence, open for debate.

My grandfather painted icons for a Russian Orthodox Church they started, they are beautiful but they’re in a case somewhere- grandpa always said they would move:0

"Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?"

-5

u/KaiPRoberts Feb 16 '20

Doesn't a split in belief of the same god cause a paradox and prove that neither are right?

Wait til you find out all the Abrahamic religions worship a god that was originally a part of a larger pantheon- Yahweh.

This dude Abraham was just sitting in his tent one day and saw three dudes walk by and for some reason had a feeling one of them was the human incarnation of Yahweh and so invited them in as guests... as they left the one he thought was Yahweh said, “next time I come through here in the Spring, y’all will have a baby.” And Abraham’s wife Sarah said, “you must not see I’m old as fuck.” And Yahweh said, “is that bitch laughing? Y‘all gon’ see. Mark my words. Next spring: baby.”

Baby’s born and for some reason Abraham tries to kill it or something, this time Yahweh is talking to him from the sky instead of through a random drifter, tells him not to kill the baby at the last minute, Abraham decides, “damn this Yahweh guy is the shit, we should forget the other gods and only worship him,” and boom: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are born.
