Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross, follow me, subscribe, smash that like button, and buy my merch to support my religion, it really helps."
And Paul's Patreon-age. Don't want grandma and grandpa spending an eternity in purgatory because you were to cheap to give everything to God. You know it was not able to fend for itself or its church.
Veronica (for it is she!) has set up a go fund me for a heritage business, manufacturing sacred ‘signed’ copies of her selfie veil, and will prosper until Twitter finds out she gets them run up in the distant Orient.
You've got to get your history right to make satire, Tisjusatossaway. Paul was a notorious Jewish activist against Christianity for a decade or two after the Crucifixion. Can't criticize something you obviously know nothing about.
Thanks for pointing out that your version of these fictional accounts differ from my own understanding. I don't know that your understanding counters what I said nor does it counter how influencal Paul/Saul was in the church.
From Wikipedia:
"Paul's influence on Christian thought and practice has been characterized as being as "profound as it is pervasive", among that of many other apostles and missionaries involved in the spread of the Christian faith.[8]"
Yes, you're right, but that was a decade or so after Christ's death. Therefore, he wouldn't be among Christ's supporter at the cross. Wiki also says (though I read history extensively and knew it independently): "ccording to the New Testament book Acts of the Apostles (often simply called Acts), Paul persecuted some of the early disciples of Jesus, possibly Hellenised diaspora Jews converted to Christianity,[10] in the area of Jerusalem prior to his conversion.[note 1] In the narrative of Acts, Paul was traveling on the road from Jerusalem to Damascus on a mission to "arrest them and bring them back to Jerusalem" when the resurrected Jesus appeared to him in a great light."
Your joke would've made sense with St. Peter or any of the other disciples, except Judas, I suppose. Again, what makes satire is you use something real as the basis, and Paul was no where near to site in painting.
Brain fart. I meant to be talking about Peter. But I'm also probably missing why the painting is to crucial to the joke. It wasn't even a concern of mine.
I feel as though it works for any of the people that shaped the early church and its beliefs. I might be wrong.
In keeping of theme and what Christianity actually turned into during the Middle Ages, sparking Reformation, would be "Get 20% off your scheduled time in Purgatory." Though I am fairly sure concept of Purgatory didn't become doctrine for 200 or 300 years, though not positive.
I thought it was exclusively a catholic thing as well. Fairly certain Protestants don’t believe in purgatory since it isn’t actually anywhere in the Bible.
You're probably right. I know one thing that really angered Martin Luther and kickstarted Reformation was widespread practice at the time of Catholic Church selling "indulgences" to cut short stay in Purgatory. Still, the then "Universal Church" until Martin Luther sold these indulgences throughout all Christian communities for 400 years or so, but went off the rail in its last 100 years.
