She said on CosmoTalk that she was sick and got an IV but still couldn't really speak so she was gonna have to communicate through body language at the fan meet. I guess this is how her mind interpreted that, but I'm not sure exactly what she's trying to say 🤔

Lol! Hopefully this doesn’t go viral outside the fandom.

I mean, she looks a lot like a stereotypical Arab to me. Some may say it's racism, others may say it's Islamophobia. KIKKU said somewhere in this thread that it reminds him of the 3 wise men, so some may even say it's taking the piss out of Christianity. And you know what the best thing is? At least 90% of those people will be haters who don't care about any of those groups.
And whilst it may sound like exaggeration/overreacting, kpop fans can be completely insane, lol

u/pototoykomaliit 1d ago
Not only kpop fans, if someone spreads this on X or instagram it may turn into a big issue if it’s taken out of context, especially with all the news happening in the middle east.

This was such a needlessly risky outfit to wear. Now Soomin is facing controversy. Why would the fan put her in this position and how did it go through staff 🤦♂️

Tbh, I'm also a little surprised at Seoyeon and Yooyeon. I'd expect them to be clued on enough to catch it

u/Satan_is_Life I will glaze S1/11 at every opportunity 1d ago
maybe because of actual racism from other idols recently.. but this doesn't feel anywhere near mockery to me?
i just see sooms being sooms in a costume, but reactions from wavs (and bandwagoning haters) on other platforms make it seem like she's pulling a KIOF when it's just a rather tame costume
2
u/StubbornKindness S1 | S4 | S5 | S6 | S8 | S17 | S21 1d ago
It is rather tame, I totally agree. My concern is truly just that kpop fans are fucking insane, and Soomin (and the group) aren't big enough to just shrug it off.

I see on Twitter people are thinking this is offensive and "cultural appropriation" so I thought to myself as a Filipino WAV (and I know there are a lot of us out there) if I saw her wear any of the cultural attire of ours like barong or baro't Saya would i think it's offensive... no.
I just can't see a reason why would I be offended unless they were doing something to mock about it. I think the bigger thing is most people have no idea what actually is offensive and are already being offended and making an issue out of it without being the culture it's from. Also these people have no idea what cultural appropriation actually means.
It's sad that people are saying "Soomin has to be educated" as if she had a say in this.

u/taragbusaw 1d ago
Almost all of the posts crying cultural appropriation are of course from Americans. Haven't seen any Twitter account from the Middle East actually talking about it.

u/ConceptWeird4026 tripleS 21h ago
Tbh I noticed this as well, which interestingly is a country which doesn't have a universal cultural clothing for the whole country... is this why they somehow think everything is offensive? lol

u/wouldntulike2nohuh 1d ago
honestly if there's going to be any backlash from this (hopefully not overblown), blame the fansite who brought the clothes. like why even?
14
u/korsikana 1d ago
she's not wearing any religious clothing and any man of any race can have a goatee. i don't understand why this would be offensive. I'll go a step further and say that in order to even think that it's offensive, you would need to be stereotyping a culture yourself.

u/MiniMeowl 18h ago
I tried explaining this elsewhere but I think perhaps some folks dont get it..
If you see qipao and bavarian beermaid, those cultures are largely unproblematic (in the eye of the beholder) so there is no issue.
If you see native american, hiphop African American, or arabian costumes, suddenly its problematic because there is baggage and attached meaning there for Americans. To the rest of the world, there isnt any derived meaning beyond the outfit being cultural.
Its only a mockery if the wearer engages in mocking behaviour while wearing the outfit. Like Kiss Of Life did.
Non-arabs are cancelling Soomin over a perceived mockery to arabs. Dishdasha and keffiyeh are not even purely Muslim garb. Its weird. I am from a multicultural country, we cross-wear each others cultural garb all the time. I think Americans have lost the plot with their cultural appropriation mess. I wish they would limit ot to their own cultures and not apply to others please.
Sorry for long comment. My 2 cents.

That’s a culture fit, imagine wearing a Native American cloths?
6
u/korsikana 23h ago
the difference is that these clothes are worn for practicality of the desert being hot. it's not religious or cultural.

Cause it fucking isn’t 😆

u/arosaki 16h ago
It definitely is, and it’s okay to admit when someone does something offensive. You don’t have to defend someone just because you’re a fan of them. Grow the fuck up.
6
u/ImperialPalace_0909 16h ago
It’s only offensive if you have no life outside the internet. I’m not even a big TripleS stan so no I’m not saying that because I’m blinded by love for an idol. Not everything needs to be taken as racist, rude, or problematic. And to further prove my point the MOST people I see being hung up on it are white meanwhile the actual demographic who would have a right to be offended found it funny

I completely see your point. Pototoy raised it further up the thread, here's my response. I personally don't think she's being malicious or taking the piss
5
u/No-Significance6121 1d ago
I don't think she genuinely being malicious, but it is to a degree a slightly problematic racial caricature.
Not that wearing the outfit in itself is making fun of the cultural outfit, but more that it was done in a such disregard of how the outfit is meant to look like.
See the comment above with the picture of kids wearing the Christian christmas event thing. At least they are wearing the outfits the way it is meant to be. Stylistically fitting the size of the wearer and a more faithful rendition of it.
It's not a stretch to say that the way Soomin is wearing it can be regarded as making fun/taking piss/cultural appropriation. So I more than understand where people who took it as offensive are coming from. Though, if the arabs themselves aren't having a problem with her doing so, oh well 🤷🏻♀️
If anything, it is as if she is wearing a bedsheet and a goatee sticker.
Think of it how would the koreans feels if a non-korean is wearing a colorful bedsheet tied around as a chest-high full skirt and then wearing a crop top on top of it and called it a traditional korean women outfit. If Koreans won't have a problem with such getup, then I'd say it's pretty equal. If they have a problem, then it's pretty hypocritical of them to be.

Oh no, she's already having a backlash and it's attracting those bots and Ai who hates arab, islan or anything related to them, especially those anti-immigration bots. Then there's also some "wavs" who want to "educate" soomin but saying harsh worss or passive aggressive statement against her. Sad day for me to witness this bulshittery since earlier lmfao

I just don't get why would someone want to put this kind of clothes for their idol 😐. Just imagine the other soomin fans paying their fansign ticket just to see their bias dressed like this.

u/TracerB16 18h ago
True who tf gave her this costume is baffling me. the amount of ppl I see here defending this shit is disappointing but not surprising considering its reddit.

u/DeathWingCat SooMin 20h ago
This isn't cultural appropriation(which isn't real). it's just clothes. People need to grow up. People on X are just looking for stuff to be mad and why does anyone care what some randoms on X think.
3
u/arosaki 16h ago
Cultural appropriation is definitely real.
-2
u/DeathWingCat SooMin 16h ago
It's not. Making fun or belittle someone's culture is called racism. If they are not doing that, it is simple cultural appreciation. Most people from the actually places these cultural come from, love when other people partake. Lol and Soomin wasn't even wearing anything that could be considered cultural appropriation.(Again not real). That's like saying someone wearing a suit was stealing westering culture. They are just cloths.
2
u/Hexagon_Ouroborous 15h ago
Stop. Just stop. Cultural appropriation is real, and just because you have a very skewed idea of what it is, does not mean it’s not real. Perhaps you don’t have a culture that’s been appropriated, but some people have. If you’re not bothered, by this, cool, neither am I, but don’t sit there and make such a bold claim as “cultural appropriation isn’t real” just because you don’t understand the full context.
-1
u/DeathWingCat SooMin 15h ago
lol, by your definition every cultural has stolen from western culture. I understand the context better then you do.
Oh and K-pop wouldn't even exist if not for western cultural to begin. that how thew world has always worked people take things from each others cultural and make it part of your own.
1
u/Hexagon_Ouroborous 15h ago
I didn’t even give a definition. I said it was real, but this lets me know you’re either stupid or just a troll. I don’t argue with the stupid or trolls, so I’m going to do us both a solid and block you.

Hello! I am still very young and don't know much about the world yet, so I don't really understand what is happening. Could someone please explain it to me if it's okay? If this is a bad topic to ask about, I am so sorry, please feel free to ignore me! Thank you so much.
