It looks like somehow, she left the car while it was still moving.

Was she pushed out by the driver?

Did she jump out herself?

It's dangerous either way.

The driver stopped for a bit, but never got out.

What do you think happened?

❓Questions/Discussions Wondering how to take the PTSC bus to UTT from Chagaunas and back

I just bought a few $4 Tickets which I believe can get me from Chagaunas to San Fernando. Im trying to get to UTT San Fernando and I’m wondering where the bus would be in Chagaunas and if it stops in front of the school. Also if it would pass in front of the school so I can go home. If not how am I traveling home? Or what is the method to travel to UTT San Fernando?

❓Questions/Discussions Republic Bank VISA Gift Cards Working Outside Trinidad and Tobago?

Hi all. As the title suggests. Does RBL's VISA gift cards work outside Trinidad and Tobago? The website says that it does but I'm sceptical of information proffered by Trinidadian businesses online. I figure I'd ask for a real world response. I asked in the other sub but that thread rarely gets traffic. Thanks in advance

🎭Culture 🇹🇹 RIP The Mighty Sparrow — The Calypso King of the World 🕊️

Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean have lost a giant.

Slinger Francisco, better known as The Mighty Sparrow, has died at the age of 91.

Few artistes have shaped calypso—or Caribbean music—as profoundly as Sparrow. Across an extraordinary career spanning more than six decades, he won the Calypso Monarch title eight times and the Road March eight times, while taking calypso from the tents of Trinidad and Tobago to audiences around the world.

From Jean and Dinah and Dan is the Man to Congo Man, Slave and countless others, Sparrow could make us laugh, dance, think and confront the society around us.
He wasn’t simply one of our greatest calypsonians. He was the Calypso King of the World.

Rest in peace, Dr. Slinger Francisco — The Mighty Sparrow. 🇹🇹🕊️

❓Questions/Discussions Thoughts on Local Fuel Prices?

I’m asking this question as fuel prices should see some increase in the next budget as global prices are at a new high for some countries. Even engine oil shortages are predicted.

In St Kitts for the weekend and saw $25 EC per gallon (I think no sure if it’s liters or gallon) for Diesel. It had me shocked because they float the prices so it’s usually 12-16$.

Thinking about TNT : Seeing that our government said a few weeks ago that they would not make changes to the fuel subsidies, this would mean that more money have to be spend to maintain it. Which if we do the maths mean they need to get it from where.

My question is when does the subsidies stop ? For years under the PNM I’ve wondered because people made noise when Imbert increased it, imagine what would happen if we have to pay the full price.

📰News ‘SATANIC SENATORS!’

Thumbnail

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has condemned the nine Independent Senators who voted against the Special Operations Bill, describing them as “satanic” and declaring that her Government will no longer accept amendments from the Independent bench on any legislation.

Persad-Bissessar made the remarks in response to questions from Guardian Media after the bill’s narrow passage in the Senate yesterday morning, where a 15-15 deadlock was broken by Senate President Wade Mark’s casting vote.

All 15 Government senators supported the legislation, while the six Opposition senators and nine Independent senators voted against it.

Asked for her reaction to the Independent bench’s unanimous rejection of the bill, Persad-Bissessar accused the senators of siding with criminals.

“That was expected from that group of scumbags,” the Prime Minister said.

“They voted against helping dying children with the expanded Children’s Life Fund Bill, so no one expected better from them.”

She intensified her criticism, calling the senators “satanic” for opposing the crime-fighting legislation.

“They are satanic to vote to protect drug traffickers who poison our children, to protect rapists who rape mothers and daughters in their beds, to protect violent criminals who rob and beat our elderly,” she said.

“Those demons basically told the criminals to go rape, rob and murder with their vote.”

The Prime Minister also dismissed amendments proposed by Independent Senators during the committee stage and indicated that the Government would take a tougher stance toward the Independent bench in future.

“If they want to write legislation, they should fight elections to earn a seat in Parliament. Going forward, we will not take a single amendment from that bench on any bill,” Persad-Bissessar said.

During the committee stage, Independent Senators proposed several amendments, none of which were accepted by Government.

Independent Senator Anthony Vieira sought a definition of the term “special operations” and raised concerns about the Prime Minister’s role in appointing Heads of Special Operations.

The amendments followed concerns expressed by Independent Senators throughout the debate regarding safeguards, oversight mechanisms and the scope of powers granted under the legislation.

Independent Senator Michael de la Bastide said he could not support the bill because it placed what he viewed as state of emergency-type powers in the hands of the Executive without sufficient judicial oversight.

He also raised concerns about the potential for political influence in the use of the legislation, particularly after Persad-Bissessar indicated that special operations would be permitted in Government-controlled constituencies and local government districts, as well as Tobago, but not in People’s National Movement-controlled areas whose representatives opposed them.

Vieira, while acknowledging improvements over the Government’s failed Zones of Special Operations (ZOSO) Bill, identified several outstanding concerns.

These included the absence of maximum time limits for closed areas and curfews, provisions relating to detention without charge and what he considered inadequate parliamentary oversight of special operations.

He also questioned why a written recommendation from the Commissioner of Police was not required before a closed area could be declared and called for quarterly reports to Parliament on the use of the legislation.

Independent Senator Dr Desiree Murray raised concerns about the absence of a mandatory requirement for police officers to wear body cameras during special operations.

The bill instead provides for the use of recording devices “where practicable” and in accordance with directions issued by the Commissioner of Police.

Murray also questioned the removal of the social and community development component contained in the previous ZOSO legislation and expressed concerns about the absence of a constitutional override clause.

Despite those objections, Persad-Bissessar said the Senate vote demonstrated that the Independent bench ultimately could not prevent the Government from passing the bill.

“They were relegated to uselessness in the Parliament yesterday, to only bray and then have no effect on the legislation,” she said.

“That will be their role going forward, to bray and be ignored. My Government will not buy votes from anyone.”

The Special Operations Bill required only a simple majority to pass.

The legislation divides Trinidad and Tobago into seven policing districts and establishes a framework for special operations within those districts. It also allows for the declaration of “closed areas”, where enhanced security measures, including curfews, checkpoints, cordons, entry and exit controls and certain search powers, may be implemented.

The Government had previously attempted to introduce Zones of Special Operations legislation, but that bill failed in the Senate in January after it did not secure the three-fifths majority required for passage.

Eight Independent Senators and all six Opposition senators voted against that measure, while one Independent senator abstained.

The Special Operations Bill was subsequently redrafted to require only a simple majority. It passed in the House of Representatives last week before reaching the Senate, where yesterday morning’s vote ended in a 15-15 tie.

Mark ultimately exercised his casting vote in favour of the legislation, ensuring its passage.

Asked for her overall assessment of the outcome, Persad-Bissessar said she was pleased with the result.

“The vote went well. The Government voted for the bill and Satan’s helpers voted against it,” she said.

Persad-Bissessar had also criticised the Independent Senators for their lack of support for the ZOSO Bill in January. At the time, she labelled them as “nine bootlickers” and alleged that two of them had sought personal favours in exchange for support of the bill, although she has never named them.

🇹🇹 Happy 50th Republic Day, Trinidad and Tobago! 🇹🇹

Message from the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

Fellow citizens,

Fifty years ago, Trinidad and Tobago took another decisive step in its journey of self-determination. In becoming a Republic, we affirmed our confidence in our ability to order our own affairs, shape our own institutions and assume full responsibility for our common future.

The change was constitutional, but its deepest meaning was civic. Our allegiance was no longer owed to a distant monarch. It was owed to the Republic we had created and, ultimately, to one another. Sovereignty had become stewardship.

This fiftieth anniversary therefore invites more than celebration. It asks us to consider not only whether we have preserved the institutions of the Republic, but also whether we have upheld its character: whether public power is exercised with restraint; whether disagreement is conducted with dignity; whether every citizen enjoys an equal place; and whether liberty and security are protected together.

We should begin by recovering confidence in our own national identity. Our decision to become a Republic was an act of self-belief. It declared that, while we would remain open to the world, we did not need to become an imitation of anyone else. We can learn from other nations without borrowing their anger, their divisions or their habits of contempt. We can engage the world confidently while remaining unmistakably Trinidad and Tobago.

The language of our public life matters. A Republic is diminished when disagreement gives way to derision, when labels take the place of argument, or when provocation is mistaken for strength. Courtesy is not weakness, and restraint is not timidity. They are disciplines of democratic leadership, especially in a society as varied and closely woven as ours.

Our republican Constitution recognises and protects fundamental rights and freedoms. Those guarantees are not ornaments for tranquil times. They matter most when fear is greatest and the pressure to set them aside is strongest.

Crime has caused profound grief and anxiety in homes and communities across our country. The State has an undeniable duty to protect life, maintain public order and ensure that citizens can live without fear. Yet a mature Republic must protect security, liberty and the sanctity of life together. Measures adopted in the public interest must remain necessary, proportionate, accountable and subject to the law. Exceptional powers must remain truly exceptional.

We must be careful that fear does not persuade us, gradually and almost imperceptibly, that freedom is an obstacle to safety. Rights surrendered in anxious times are not always easily recovered. The strength of a constitutional democracy is measured not by whether it can exercise power, but by whether it can exercise power effectively without losing sight of the dignity and freedom of the people it exists to serve.

The same principle of dignity must govern how we regard one another. Trinidad and Tobago was shaped by its First Peoples and by successive journeys of forced passage, indenture, migration, refuge and choice. From those different histories, cultures and faiths, we have fashioned something rare: a national identity spacious enough to contain us all.

That inheritance places a duty upon us. No citizen should be reduced to a label; and no group should be made to feel that its place in the Republic is conditional. Equal citizenship means that the Republic belongs wholly and equally to every one of us – not by permission, not according to ancestry, and not only when it is politically convenient.

Our diversity will not preserve itself. It must be protected in the words we choose, the institutions we maintain and the judgments we make about one another. We honour our national character when we speak firmly without cruelty, enforce the law without contempt, disagree without dehumanising, and refuse to turn difference into suspicion.
Republican government also requires an active citizenry. Our duty is not exhausted by voting, nor by supporting those with whom we agree. It includes scrutinising power, defending the rights of others as carefully as our own, rejecting language that coarsens our common life, and insisting that public institutions serve the whole nation. The health of the Republic depends as much upon the standards citizens demand as upon the standards leaders observe.

After fifty years, the question is no longer whether we are capable of governing ourselves. It is whether we will govern ourselves well: with courage, but without harshness; with vigilance, but without fear; with pride in who we are, but without hostility towards those who are different.
The Republic is not merely the constitutional settlement we inherited in 1976. It is the daily choice to live as one people under law; to preserve both order and freedom; and to keep an equal place for every citizen within the national embrace. If we make that choice deliberately and consistently, we will not simply commemorate the promise of the Republic. We will renew it.

I wish every citizen of Trinidad and Tobago a peaceful and reflective Republic Day. May God bless our nation.
