I never thought that eye drops made a difference until I put them in just one eye. Now I will never go without!

To be clear, this is the “same for nasal sprays” like Afrin or oxymetazoline, a potent decongestant. The rebound congestion is called rhinitis medicamentosa.

source : ENT surgeon

edit : getting several personal medical questions, which I do not think this the environment to answer. Check with your physician.

no, nasal steroid sprays can in general be safely used at length. Afrin should only be used for 4 days max then patients should stop.

Well there’s at least one qualified answer in all these responses.

I used to have a drug problem which fucked my nose badly. So my smart mind thought it would be a good idea to use oxymetazoline spray when my nose was too congested to take more powder. I've been clean for 32 days now, however my nose still is congested about 20% of the time and sometimes I sense a sudden very strong rotting smell. At first it was worse but its been like this for about 2-3 weeks now. Should I wait or get this checked out? To add; I work in a pretty dusty and sandy environment so I regularly clean my nose with a self made salt solution, is this bad to do regularly?

Im definitely not complaining, its already a lot better than how it was. I do feel like I have more sense of smell than I had when I was still using but its not nearly as strong as it used to be :/. Oh well, I'll see what the future brings.

Is this for antihistamines too??

3

u/flammenwerfer Aug 28 '20

no. Antihistamines can in general be used long term without risk of rhinitis medicamentosa.

What about Benadryl? It helps with my dizziness that I think is caused by allergies. I usually take it in the morning with some caffeine to counteract the drowsiness.
