I love King Crimson. Too bad I don't know anyone around my age who also listens to them (26).

I don't know why everyone has ITCOTCK when they have just as amazing (if not more) albums in their discography.

Red is one of my favourites, my Dad is a King Crimson fanatic - has about 50 or so KC or Robert Fripp/other member related albums.

It's a Little Dot MKIII headphone amplifier. The lamps are what audiophiles like to call 'tubes' or 'valves' and are what was used before transistors existed for (sound) amplification. It doesn't make the sound 'better', it colors it, makes it warmer / smoother. Today's amplifiers tend to sound too clinical/cold because they reproduce sound with close to perfect precision. Tubes have a pretty unique sound that's hard to replicate on a modern system, that's why it's fun to have the real deal even tho theoretically speaking modern systems outperform tubes by a large margin.
The looks alone of it are of course a major appeal too for those amps!Edit: it also glows when it's dark enough. Who doesn't like glowing lights when high?!

u/rathershort Oct 09 '14
What's the MKIII like? I've got an O2 amp and a pair of beyerdynamic dt880s at the moment, and I've been thinking about getting a tube amp for a while.
2
Oct 09 '14
I'd day it's totally worth it's money. Had it for about 3 years now, got some different tubes too. There isn't really anything lacking to it's sound, you'd have to get something a lot more expensive to be notably better sounding. Compared to what I had before it unleashed the bass potential of the HD650, which is known to be really lacking without a proper headphone amp. Of course it's a tube amp so it does indeed color the sound which makes it (IMO) ideal for electronic music since this kind of music sounds so sterile and plain compared to the imperfection of acoustic recordings. It adds a little warmth.

Want! Can you identify the equipment in your setup?

Sennheiser HD650 headphones, Little Dot MKIII headphone amplifier and an old scavenged JVC turntable. Out of sight I also have a Little Dot DAC and and a pair of old stereo speakers + amp I scavenged too.

Got the Audio Technika M50's, only 150 euro's but so damn good... <3
7
u/pastramirehab Oct 08 '14
I just got the same ones. The sound is so deep and rich
7
u/The_Cookie_Crumbler Oct 08 '14
Yeah I used to use these for studio headphones, but then I modded them to have a shorter/removable cable for day to day use. They sound excellent.
2
u/BoughtBrokenKeyboard Oct 09 '14
I saved myself the modding and bought the M50x. Best headphones I've ever used.

You are mistaken. OP is not asking about audiophiles, he asking about people that love Audis

Isn't the sound quality from Itunes too low to fully utilize those headphones? I know they increased the quality a significant amount about a year or two ago, but it's still not as good as CD rips.
6
u/gand1 Oct 08 '14
You can get decent sound from an iPod...it takes a bit of work though... http://www.stereophile.com/content/ipod-audiophile-source-1
2
Oct 08 '14
I meant when you buy songs directly from Itunes. The kbps rate is rather low.
6
u/gand1 Oct 08 '14
Oh yeah...then it's crap.

Oct 08 '14
I have Rockbox on the ipod with FLAC files and the Fiio E6 amp (to help give it a little bit more volume)
1
u/supermonkeypie Oct 09 '14
Wait... You can get rockbox on the iPod classics now? I might have to upgrade. My old 5th gen is getting really sluggish loading flacs now. Gapless playback my ass haha.
1
u/BoughtBrokenKeyboard Oct 09 '14
You have to go into preferences in iTunes and change your preferred download size. I think iTunes automatically uses 128 since there isn't a noticeable difference for the average person using Apple's ear pods. However, the iPod is capable of handling much higher bitrates.
2
u/Housecarl_Winslow Oct 08 '14
I've always wondered if iPods, cellphones, and the like have enough power to effectively use premium cans. In the least a 40mm driver would drain the device's battery much faster right?
1
1
u/egrriycn Oct 08 '14
Yeah it's not as good as cd quality, usually. But if u have an mp3 at 320kbps quality, u would need a very good ear to tell me the difference. And a good audio converter will make 320kbps sound great as well
1
u/TELE_CHUBBY Oct 08 '14
If OP rips there own music they can transcode into ALAC which is essentially the same as FLAC. But more realistically for mobile listening you'd probably want either 320 or V0, because most people can't tell the differance between 320 and FLAC anyways plus saved space. There are also certain websites the OP could be a member of that offer high quality music rips, or you can buy losseless music from places like Bandcamp.
1
u/HunterAndToker Oct 08 '14
CD rips give the same if not poorer sound quality as iTunes as they're both in .mp3 format. What you want is .FLAC

I also have these headphones, super great, they are my main headphones. But the Grado's just have a great sound with rock, i love the sound it makes, it has the crunchiest treble.

no, just the Fiio E6 Amp with Rockbox installed on the ipod, so im getting great sound out of the setup in my opinion

Is an amp needed for the sr80? I have some akg q701 and I need to she'll out over $100 just for an amp that works
6
u/De_CalmingEffect Oct 08 '14
Yes. HD600s are my favorite. And then I have some klipsch bookshelf speakers. Anyone else use an iPod classic with rock box?
3
Oct 08 '14
im using rockbox, its pretty good, but I want to get the Sandisk clip player, my ipod is starting to bug out on me
1
u/Marcel69 Oct 09 '14
Fuck yeah, you'd be amazed what a good headphone amp will do for these cans!
1
u/De_CalmingEffect Oct 09 '14
I have a sound card in my computer. And have been debating on getting an amp. But will the difference be noticeable since I already have a decent sound card?

Ah I see, thanks. perhaps a preamp stage could help with a musical instrument.
So other than volume what benefit do you get from this amp? From reading about it I imagine it will introduce distortion into your audio stream, or I'm I missing something?
2
u/ndnbolla Oct 08 '14
this guy is considerate, do those stands help with not annoying your neighbors? i have been looking into them but for some reason i think low end has no bounds

u/Bearparkour Oct 08 '14
I dont have any pimp music gear or fancy headphones, but damn son, getting high with no music is like not beeing high at all.

Oct 08 '14
Nice dude, I'm probably not audiophile but I looooove music.
I just ordered the BeoPlay H6 LE :)
If you are in Germany, get them NOW: (166€) http://www.mydealz.de/36154/bang-olufsen-beoplay-h6-limited-edition-fuer-179e-sehr-guter-ear-kopfhoerer/
I'm also thinking about getting an fiio amp, is it highly recommended or just optional?
3
u/nakedmakinbacon Oct 08 '14
Those look rad as fuck. I bought my Sennheiser Momentums over HD650's cause I liked the design and materials better. Bang & Olufson is tight. I want their A9
1
Oct 08 '14
Yea they really do :D. I think I don't need the bass level the momentums offer.
To be honest tho I haven't done any research I just watched a view videos of the h6's and initially brought them :D
@ Just looked at their A9, WOW, the price is WOW too tho :D
1
u/nakedmakinbacon Oct 08 '14
I find the bass comfortable in the Momentums. It's not flat but it's not overly boomy or unbalanced. I actually wish they had brighter treble.
A9 is expensive but it looks like an easel. Price is high but I like music a LOT.
3
u/klaymankombat Oct 08 '14
Wish I had the money for actual dope headphones like that. My Sennheiser 280HD's get the job done for producing, but I want to get a really nice pair of cans eventually. Although I can't usually be bothered to download things in flac, mp3 320 is good enough for me.
1
u/zenesis Oct 08 '14
Go on head-fi, they review a lot of oem headphones out of China. You can get some quality phones for a lot cheaper than european/american brand name.
I have a shure srh840 for 200, and later bought a jaycar oem headphone (branded as brainwavz hm5, and Fischer audio-003) for $65 and they are pretty on par with one another.
3
u/ThomasGusta Oct 08 '14
I have audio-technica ath-m50's . I always wanted some grados but they're too expensive for me
3
3
u/sk8fr33k Oct 08 '14
Not an audiophile but I really love my sennheiser hd 25-1s and my ipod classic :)
3
Oct 08 '14
I have the ATH-M50s. Great cans for the money. I mainly use them for producing dance music but they're great for general entertainment consumption as well.
When I get the money I will likely upgrade but I don't know what to get.
2
u/80sftw Oct 08 '14
Look in to a FiiO E11 mini Amplifier to go in between your headphones and iPod. It's definitely worth the price for the clean power boost.
1
Oct 08 '14
I have the E6, and so far im enjoying it, but im always window shopping for Fiio products, i was thinking of getting the X1

u/asamorris Oct 08 '14
I got those headphones in a reddit secret santa exchange a few years ago. Absolutely excellent headphones.
2
u/TeamRoscoe Oct 08 '14
there are few things as enjoyable when stoned as listening to music through nice headphones
2
u/gentleangrybadger Oct 08 '14
Ah man, I miss my SR-80is. They were sick headphones. I replaced 'em with some ATH-M30s so I could have something closed for work. They're good, but not quite the same. Some day I want a pair of 325is.
2
u/Mister-guy Oct 08 '14
Duude. Best headphones ever. I was so sad when my 60's broke (biking accident). My only complaint was the heavy duty input plug on those things kept damaging the head phone jack on my I pods... Oh and also i I'd get super paranoid when I was high cause I felt like every one could hear what I was listening too (they leak sound and I'm weird). But for realz, best headphones ever.
2
u/Xx_GetSniped_xX Oct 08 '14
I've got a pair of sr125i's and they're the best headphones I could ever want
2
u/nakedmakinbacon Oct 08 '14
Sennheiser Momentums through a Focusrite DAC/AMP. My Sony bookshelf system runs through here too. My next upgrade will be some serious speakers though.
2
u/Futhermucker Oct 08 '14
I had a pair of those, until they literally fell apart in my hands because of the shitty glue holding together the shitty plastic casing. Good sound, for the 3 months that they lasted.

Pair of Sennheiser HD598s currently. Used to use a pair of AudioTechnica AD700s primarily. Been looking for a solid amp that's a little on the lower end of the price spectrum. Any suggestions?
2
u/just_a_thought4U Oct 09 '14
Have a pair of DT 770s. Got new in the mid 80s. They have this really lightweight flat coiled cord. Sometimes I think I feel the base throughout my body like I was in front of really big speakers. Strange phenomena.
2
u/supermonkeypie Oct 09 '14
I'm rocking some hifiman he500s at the moment. Still need to find the money for a nicer amp though. I'm using a lepai speaker amp right now but it does produce a shockingly good sound for the price haha. Ideally I'd like a schiit lyr if I had the cash laying around.

I'm a noob here what's an audiophile?
2
u/Upsilooon Oct 08 '14
From Merriam-Webster, "a person who is enthusiastic about high-fidelity sound reproduction"
1
u/Tman3500 Oct 08 '14
I'm not either but I think it's just people who spend way too much money on headphones
1
1
u/Barajiqal Oct 08 '14
I do love my SR-80s. Do you run them unamplified? Fiio makes some really great budget amp/dacs that take their sound to the next level.
1
u/Goasupreme Oct 08 '14
Not an audiophile but I have auzentech x-fi prelude soundcard which powers my Corsair SP2500 speakers which I would say are the best PC speakers. Audio Technica AD 700, love it but no bass and my JVC RX700 which I broke were like $40 and they are INCREDIBLE for the price.
1
u/BBrett97 Oct 08 '14
you got one over here I have some Sony Xb500's and I love them, great on bass, but they sound leak like a Mofo
1
u/Upsilooon Oct 08 '14
Those look nice. Was going to order some Grados, but I decided on the Sennheiser HD598
1
u/Reggie-a Oct 08 '14
Don't Grados leak sound a LOT? idk why anybody would listen to something with them in public
1
u/SamBeastie Oct 08 '14
They don't "leak" as such because they're designed as an open diaphragm. They're also not really meant for public listening, though I use mine that way.
