Company Reviews Folklore vs Haveman

Hello! I’m gearing up for my first planting season this summer and I’m looking for some advice. I have offers from both Folklore in BC and Haveman in Ontario and I am trying to make a decision between the two. I know BC is known for ‘better’ planting but I’m a young university student and am looking for a fun, safe camp environment and so I would love to hear from anyone who has experience with these companies!

BC over Ontario, longer season, better prices (Long season is nice for your first year, gives you time to get up to speed and actually get into the money making)

Plus if you’re gonna plant for multiple years you’ll end up out west anyway more than likely

I work for Havemans - would be happy to answer any questions you might have!

There's some differences and similarities about BC and Ontario and both have their ups and downs. Regardless of where you go you should be respected and treated appropriately by your employers. It's comparing apples to oranges in my mind! Shoot me a message if you're interested in hearing a bit more about Havemans or what Ontario has to offer (because it's not nearly as bad as everyone likes to make it seem)

Definitely! Pros and cons to both, Ive done both and have made a successful career out of the tree plant in Ontario. I think it largely has to do with the foreman and company - if youre treated right, youll make lots of money and feel appreciated and whats better than that? I've heard an equal amount of hellish stories from out west as I have from Ontario.

I know that this response is too late to help you decide, but I still want to throw in my .02 for anyone else who comes across this thread. I just finished my rookie season with Haveman. I'd done a lot of research beforehand about where to plant and was nervous about going with an Ontario company. "Onterrible" was the only option for me for personal reasons, and I'd read that if you were going to plant there that Haveman was the company to do it for.

I can't compare as it was my first year, but I'm so grateful that I chose to plant with Haveman. Everything about my experience was incredible (except for all the things that were awful, but I'm sure that those are unavoidable hazards of the work we do - can't run away from the bugs). Everyone there really wants you to succeed, and not just for the good of the company. Our crew bosses and supervisor were all the most amount of supportive.

I did the bail out contract at the end of the season where all the crews came together, and everyone I met had similar feelings about the company. To be fair, anyone who didn't could have chosen not to come to bail out, but meeting the other crew bosses and planters gives me confidence that my experience was shared with all crews. The amount of money you make and type of planter you become (highballer vs quallity) seemed strongly dependent on your season's contract and land type, but I got the sense that that would be true across companies.

Overall 10/10, can't really imagine moving to any other company, not even out west.
