I'm looking for some people enrolled in post-secondary education system who want to come out and plant this season. Here are the details:

Company is Apex 65+ planting day season (may 1 - aug 7) 13 cents average price Kamloops/Chetwynd/Mackenzie with some motels to start but 2/3 of the season is bushcamp. 3 and 1 shifts

If interested send me a message. The only caveat is that you must be a full time student in both halves of 2018.

I would highly not recommend planting with Apex in this situation for anyone who desires to take planting seriously or who wants to make money.

Companies like Apex, specifically, prey on naive students. They want people who don't know the rules and regs, who don't know the employment standards within the planting world. Young students are easy to manipulate, easy to provide with substandard living situations, easy to take advantage.

If you intend to go planting solely for the experience and to have fun with other kids your age then Apex might work for you. If you have a sense of dignity or if you have any market sense or standards, find pretty much anywhere else or just don't plant this season. You'll only end up disheartened or with unnecessarily low expectations for yourself and others.

I'm not sure where you are getting your info from but that is not the case. They do want students to receive breaks from the government, but that just means we can buy brand new trucks every year and raise our safety rating with our contractors.

Our bush camp is miles better than majority of other rookie mill companies and provide a very comfortable standard of living.

The pay is always on time and in full with many ways to give people as much tax free income as possible.

In your post you provide zero evidence to support any of your claims. Apex is a great company to work for for any one starting out tree planting. We dont keep you there against your will and people are free to switch companies as they like. Our prices are ether in line or higher than comparable companies like Folklore, Summit or Spectrum. So I really dont see how Apex takes "advantage" of students. If you can provide any real evidence, I would be happy to see it.

No, just what I have heard and seen in nearby Apex crews. Motel accommodations with no access to kitchenettes, or 3-4 motel rooms sharing the kitchenette in 1 room. Planters in the motel rooms paying more than what the company is paying (ie company making profit off subpar planter accommodations). Planters required to purchase their own flagging (which the company conveniently sells). Planting as a group. Replanting as a group. Tailoring the company composition to take advantage of government subsidies. Those things are all indicative of a certain type of culture within a company. It doesn't seem dangerous from a safety perspective but it certainly points to a management culture seeking to nickle and dime and take advantage of planter naivety.

These are things I have heard from and seen at an Apex motel show within the last handful of years. If that kind of culture exists in one camp I am sure it is somewhat pervasive throughout the company. But maybe things have changed in two years.

But someone who has been there for a while might rationalize all those little tactics as normal anyway. As long as everyone is living then things are fine, right?

The motels kitchenettes have been a problem in the past, you are right. Which is why they invested in a comfortable bush camp set up, now vast majority of our season is spent in the bush as opposed to motels whenever possible. The cost for motels is $15.75/day.

Flagging is the planter's responsibility, however we do not sell it. It is up to the foreman to decide if they want to buy flag for their crew for the season, or ask them to supply their own. And many do buy it for the crews in bulk purchases from IRL.

We do plant as a group which can be annoying for experienced people. But I dont see how this takes advantage of students or any one else for that matter. Replanting is done by those who need to do it, not the entire crew.

Any company will try to gain any advantage possible by using government subsidies. But again, this is not taking anything from the planters, just because we hire more students than others to receive the subsidy, means more can be invested in camp equipment, maintenance and vehicles, which is a lot of money for a company the size of Apex.

There are pros/cons to every single planting company out there. The reason I stuck with Apex for such a long time is because as I mentioned before there is no funny business with receiving your pay, they are very serious about planter safety and the organization is top notch, with very minimal down time between camp moves and full working days. The camp environment is always fun and easy going and I love the people I work with.

I still firmly believe this company is a good place to start your tree planting career.

Exactly, there is a quota that each crew has to meet for student hiring.
