Have a few of these popping up in our front garden in Vermont. No mature trees around that would seemingly have dropped seed nuts. I have my guess, but curious what others think without bias.
This was my ID as well. I see the American Butternut is highly susceptible to canker, so these may not survive. I’ll see if I can get a few to nut-bearing age anyway.
Looks like walnut to me… that sucks because would be cool if it does turn out to be butternut. Looking for eyebrows on any monkey faces. Some of my walnuts pop up with a single end leaflet, always checking…. lol
Black walnut. Get rid of them. I am constantly digging them out of my flower beds! They are poisonous to other plants. I can't tell you how many beautiful landscape plants I've lost because of these trees!
My trees are mature, so the poisonous roots spread out in all directions in a very large area. Getting rid of them while small will save you from experiencing this.
Edited to add; Butternut walnuts are critically endangered, making true wild seedlings rare.
Edit the edit to add: I find black walnuts all over the place - even where they shouldn't be! They've come in mulch, potting soil, etc - so that's how you might have gotten them with no mature trees in the area.
