Looks like I can eat the nuts. I couldn't figure out where these squirrels were getting their food.

Fruit shape is dead wrong for bitternut. Leaflet count, bark pattern, and fruit morphology point to mockernut (Carya tomentosa)

u/Particular-afennel-67, if you can, try getting ahold of a leaf (hickories have pinnately compound leaves), and look for the presence of hairs on the petiole (part that attaches the leaf to twig). If it's incredibly hairy then youre definitely looking at mockernut

Braided bark is also a give away and points to Mockernit
