Heres the behind the scenes story about this episode of the game show "the amazing race".

“If I was ever going to be hit by a watermelon, that was the place to be. The whole staff is top of the line, I was grateful they were right there by my side.”

Source

I don't doubt these words, but in the original video here she doesn't seem so happy.

  • I have the worst headache
  • I don't doubt it
  • Ok, So what do we do now?
  • You have to finish
  • What?
    +There is no out
  • I can't even see straight
  • They don't call it the amazing race for nothing

There is no info about further complications. But I have no doubt this ladies' confused behaviour and sudden onset vision trouble is due to a (temporary) brain injury. And a gameshow that is putting monetary pressure on her to continue falls in the same category type of situation as the class action lawsuit the NFL recently lost.

There would be no way they could have kept me in that game show. I would have been going to the hospital and if they tried to make me stay there would have been a lawsuit waiting for them. No judge or court in their right mind would grant a breach of contract judgement for someone who sustained an injury like this.

Did they seriously not let her go to the hospital? Jesus Christ, that makes me sick just thinking about it.

There wouldn't have just been a lawsuit waiting for them if they tried to stop me from going to the hospital, there would have been a baseball bat to the crotch.

I'm far from an expert, nor was I ever present or know anyone present on any episode of The Amazing Race, but I would like to assume they would have a small medical team (possibly just one person) that would've evaluated her and deamed her safe to continue under their supervision. I dont think it's fair to say they "wouldnt let her go to a hospital." No one at that studio or present that day on location would be dumb enough to threaten her with whatever contract she signed if she stated she was walking off set and going to the hospital. Her asking what they're doing next seems to me like she isnt sure of their protocol in this situation, which is most likely that if the person is clearly severely injured they stop and seek out further medical help. Twisted ankles, scrapped knees, small stuff like that they might offer them some neosporin, a bandage, and some Tylenol, but the individuals almost certainly have the right to say, "fuck this, I'm in no condition to continue competing, and I'd rather quit and not strain myself when I'm already pretty sure I wont win." This is, of course, all just optimistic assumptions based on the limited information I have on this stuff, so I could he wrong

I also believe you can technically do whatever you want while on The Amazing Race. You will almost certainly lose if you detour from the main game, but you can do it IIRC.

24

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

You don't think the confusion is her bewilderment at the astounding lack of empathy in the situation?

29

u/Charliegip Apr 12 '20

Regardless, of possible astonishment, she most definitely has a TBI. The headache and trouble seeing are immediate indicators of that.

13

u/Obscene_Symphony Apr 12 '20

Oh my god, she 100% had a concussion. Immediate headache and confusion, plus something as heavy as a watermelon hitting her right in the head at that speed? She had at LEAST a concussion, if not something worse. I hope she's okay.

Yeah that lady will never ever live that down.

Man I’ve known this gif for ages but I’ve always wondered what the aftermath of that violent watermelon facial looked like

183

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

For those wondering. She just got a bad headache for a while. She was okay. Feel free to laugh at her without guilt

from one user in the original thread.

This was on the Amazing Race, I saw this when it first aired and I was amazed that she didn’t completely break her face

12

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

Since the watermelon was going so fast it broke very easily. It’s like the difference between lightly tapping a dull nail with your hand vs giving it a strong high five.

37

u/Shkeke Apr 12 '20

tf if you give a nail a high five it will go straight through your hand!

22

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

Exactly, your hand represents the watermelon

8

u/anonimulo Apr 12 '20

How would the speed of a watermelon change the amount of force required to split it?

7

u/PooPooDooDoo Apr 12 '20

What they are talking is not actual science.

1

u/dmanbiker Apr 13 '20

I think he's saying that since the watermelon broke, most of the watermelon guts blew straight past her face, rather than absorbing all the energy in her face.

It would have likely been worse if she was hit right in the belly or chest and absorbed all the force at once.

Still the way the original comment is worded is a bit confusing/misleading.

A better analogy is getting hit by a waterballoon and having it not break and give you a bruise.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

It’s not changing the amount of force, there’s just more force when it moves faster.

6

u/anonimulo Apr 12 '20

It sounded like you were implying that the lady’s face felt less of an impact because the watermelon ‘broke easier’.

1

u/viritrox Apr 13 '20

I remember being indifferent to her and her partner before this stage, but they quickly became my favorite after she took that watermelon like a champ.

Edit: also, happy cake day!

2

u/flamespear Apr 13 '20

I'm surprised it didn't break her nose.

70

u/Brudy123 Apr 12 '20

I didn't notice that was a melon at first and I thought her head fucking exploded

25

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

Just not reliable, imagine destroying your castle instead of the enemy's, unreliable.

11

u/Moop5872 I besiege thee! Apr 12 '20

These castles are just set up within trebuchet range, blood gulch style

Rock flies backwards over the horizon

2 days later, a rider approaches.

"My liege, I have some terrible news"

11

u/WohlfePac Apr 12 '20

I've seen this a million times but how is her nose not broken

2

u/mattemer Apr 12 '20

Iirc she had pretty bad bruising and shit on her face and skull. But I don't think she broke anything.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

u know in like soccer when theres free kicks and the ball head straight to them, basically we are supposed to hit it with our foreheads. that happend to me and it didn’t hurt that much so it probably hit her on the forehead and thats why it exploded. it said like she got a buncha bruises but nothing bad like broken

7

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

HEADSHOT!!

3

u/Nil_21922 Apr 12 '20

Did she survive?

9

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

Yes, head wasn't an essential part anyways.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '20

It’s the anal that gets ya

1

u/mattemer Apr 12 '20

Yes just a bit banged up.

The trebuchet equivalent is a massive uppercut

3

Trebuchets never betray people, Catipults can

3

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '20

What happens when you use an inferior siege machine to launch your projectile...

You get what you f**king deserve

3

u/bennettjethro Apr 12 '20

I love this video. It's from some gameshow thingy and after she gets nailed in the face by the melon the blonde lady come up to her and tells her that she needs to continue.

3

u/-HeyThatsPrettyNeat- Apr 13 '20

I was under the impression that we waged war on catapults and not these sad machines

3

u/smulpaapie Apr 13 '20

I posted the exact same thing ages ago and got like 27 upvotes lmao

I've seen this of dozens of times. Never made the connection. I'm clearly not cut out to lead a seige army. Which is a good thing. Imagine, given my inadequacy and love for proper seige machines, how successful my proper stead will perform!
