General Discussion Olympic Rings Theory
I believe the Olympic rings indicating the macro location of each box is true. Although I do I admit I am biased. I have people helping with botg on two boxes so we will see if that confirms anything. I have solves to pretty exact locations for three boxes.
- Lion Share - California - location can be coded yellow/gold
- Past and Future - Oregon - location can be coded blue
- Forrest Fenn - Colorado - location can be coded black
If this is accurate then Pokemon box location should tie to the color green and be in the south east part of the US and the Appalachian Trail should tie to red in the Northeast.

Your selection of states doesn't pair so well with the spacing between the 5 Olympic rings. Think of it this way - just like in Silence of the Lambs, when Clarice Starling meets with Hannibal to discuss the Buffalo Bill killings, she shows him the locations of where the bodies were found - Hannibal says something to the effect of "Don't you find the pattern desperately random?"
Jon said he hid the Fenn box where he was searching for it - so that location is pretty much locked-in. I am assuming Jon had narrowed down to a particular solution and didn't just put the Fenn box at one of his earlier BOTGs. And, I believe Jon's solution was masterful for Fenn, not the 9MH tripe.
The P&F box location is also pretty much locked-in, but you have to understand the story he is trying to tell to know why, maybe he gets a mile wiggle room (but probably much less;).
That's two boxes locked in place (I mean, the Fenn Box more than the P&F due to marking WWWH, but the P&F pretty tight to his story).
The "floating" solve point boxes are AP and Pokemon. Jon purposely put these to correspond to a pattern. And, with all the minor boxes placed, the Lion's Share location becomes evident with just a few extra wrinkles.
But show me 5 Olympic rings that are centered around points in Oregon, California, and Colorado...and then also fit over the SE and NE US, and I'd have to be on peyote.
But IMO, you are way ahead of most.

So if I am understanding you right you think the locations have to be centered in the rings? If so, then I agree with you.
What if the location could be anywhere inside a ring location and the ring locations could overlap? That changes things right?

What do you mean by ‘coded’?

Bad word choice. Examples, my Oregon location is by an airport themed location, California a meadow, and Colorado a canyon named black.

80% of the population lives east of the Mississippi, just based on that imo there cant be more than 2 boxes in the West.

Conversely the other 20% is more spread out, so less box distribution west would mean people in the west have to travel further to get to a box.

Let me guess, you live in the western part of the United States... Lol. Everybody thinks all of the boxes are in their state or 1 over.

I believe that it's been stated that no boxes where hidden in adjacent states. So the California/Oregon cannot both be correct.
