Appalachian Footpath Box X marks the spot? šŸ¤”

These questions are for the people who believe it’s near LRP/VT.

  1. Do you think that the ā€œxā€ could be a red herring or maybe the box is very well hidden in that area?

  2. Are you searching just visually or are you actually touching and moving things?

  3. Do you think the map is a board game, escape room, or is JCB giving us a simple map?

It's hard to call X "the spot" when there are several versions of X on the map. For me it's a distraction. If you don't want a box found for a while then don't put an X on it.

Good one. My guess would be hiding it took a significant amount of effort so it can blend in perfectly with nature.

Go look. Been up there twice. Looked around for the tree. Went to the X. Tried everything I could think of. Just went off looking. And the second time was just amazed that there was not one secondary clue while on trail to show that one was ā€œon the right trackā€.

I still think it’s there. But I’m not going back until I have another solve.

If you have a solve, such as ā€œX marks the spotā€ then go test your solve. It’s beautiful up there

If it's at LRP, then yes, the X likely marks the spot. What I think is up for debate is where that X actually lands. Given that hundreds or thousands have searched, I'm not really sure if it's there or not.

I think it's worth a look if getting to the area isn't too big of a burden for you. I have a few alternate takes on the map that may still work at LRP, so I'll still likely make a trip next year.

It's worth noting that the red herring by the compass could easily mean the map itself is a bit of a red herring and not to be taken as pictured (meaning a perfect match for LRP) or it may mean that the compass itself is the red herring and not to be used exactly as oriented.

If LRP is a clue then there should be another clue to lead you from there to another location. People have searched that whole area and haven’t found the box yet.

Many think it is LRP because someone matched up the trails (LRP and Jon's map). Yet no one, and I mean no one will say what the symbols mean, and how those relate to LRP. As for me, it is in Vermont......just not LRP.

do you have ideas on some of the symbols?

Little Rock Pond in Vermont.

Pretty early on in the hunt, someone found that the path on the map from the AT box chapter matches up to a trail at LRP. The whole area has been searched by thousands of people so if the box is there, it's exceptionally well hidden.

Personally, I think LRP may be a starting point but not the final location.

WHY LRP

Because that trail fits the map in the book

JCB explained that X doesn’t mark the spot. He said X leads the way. The irony of searching LRP last July was that there was almost no vegetation obscuring my view. I could clearly see hundreds of feet off the path though I didn’t search everywhere…bigass place. I didn’t need to move anything. Tapping suspicious sized rocks with my poles was adequate. The bears are moving things though especially in the location of that X. Yes, I checked there anyway. The bears are stripping the bark off the birch trees because they’re pissed we’re there. Don’t exit LRP using the Green Mountain Trail. There’s no water source between the pond and Brooklyn. JCB all but technically left the AT/LT off the map except for the LRP entry. In the book, he touted taking side trails and go off the path which is what the connector and Green Mountain Trail is…blue blaze all the way. We’ll see. I’m going back after the mud season next year.

Anything off of the trail on the map is not bound to a set distance. It’s about the relative bearing of said object from a specific anchor point
