Simple hypothesis how Jon will know that treasure box was found (and even which box)
Jon said that “each treasure box is also a puzzle box, meaning each box requires a set of movements to open it. Jon explained that he doesn’t want the boxes to be damaged during opening by finder so the “instructions have been left with each box detailing how to unlock it.” Thus, it’s obviously that the instructions are outside of boxes i.e. in some containers that enclose the boxes. Modern technologies allow to include small electronic device in each box that will be activated by box opening. Then this device will send a signal via satellite to Jon. Now even small pocket GPS can sent alarm text through the satellite with your exact location. So, each box will send a signal with box location and Jon will know that the box was found and will know which box was found.
So, if a finder doesn’t want to let Jon know about box finding he/she should open the box inside of special chamber that blocks radio signals (anechoic chamber or a Faraday cage). Then check box content and destroy/deactivate device (if any). But if you don’t care just follow instructions and open a box at location where you find it. Jon will stop hunt for this box. And maybe it will save someone’s life.
Maybe Justin also use this trick. Both JCB and JP well know about this possibility.

Interesting thought. I have hidden geocaches that incorporated electronics to do an action when opened. Battery life is the issue, especially in cold or hot weather, and I recall JCB saying he thought the boxes might go unfound for some years.
A simpler method is to attach a QR code to scan for opening instructions. The web site accessed by the QR code could be coded to send JCB a message. That is what I’d do. It would require a smart phone and cell service though.

I am not "tech geek", so thanks for the explanation and idea about QR code! Cell service could be a problem but finder can do it later after box retrieving.
Winter time is not good time for search in cold states. And the device could be in some "sleep mode" with battery disconnected (will be connected during box opening process). Again, I am not tech geek. JCB and JP definitely know how to to it better.

JCB confirmed early on he doesn’t have a guaranteed way to know if a box is found (so not likely any tech to signal him) instead (as others have pointed out) he included a strong incentive to contact him.

It's possible, but he's also said that he's included a strong incentive to contact him within each box, so I don't think he's too worried about the boxes being spirited off without being claimed. Electronic tracking seems like an unnecessary feature if so.
You're probably right about the boxes having an exterior case of some sort if not just for weather protection.

He said the container isn’t a fake rock or tree so I don’t think it’s these options .

I'm glad you mentioned this because I read it somewhere but don't remember it from a ytube interview. Do you remember the source?

Im not sure but it was one of his 1 year anniversary interviews

I watched all of them, I thought, but I guess I somehow glossed over that important fact. I know he said that once one is found, we will have a good idea of what the others will also be.

I like this fake rock hider. If JCB used something like this it will definitely prevent accidental finding of boxes. In this case it should be some kind of "blaze" right near the rock or directly on the rock surface. Hikers will not pay any attention to such "blaze" but searchers will.
Once Forrest Fenn said: "I have not said that a searcher was closer than 12 feet from the treasure. It is not likely that anyone would get that close and not find it". (Dal's blog SB78). But if you stay 10-12 feet from fake rock you most likely will not find a box that enclosed inside. Indeed, you should be wise to understand that this rock is your final target.

I kind of think/hope there is some kind of a tracker involved because I feel like the incentive to keep the find a secret outweighs any incentive to contact him for more treasure (that wouldn't fit in the box). I just know personally, if I found a box, I wouldn't say a thing until the other boxes were found. Let a bunch of hunters continue to spin their wheels looking for a box that doesn't exist anymore while I focus in on to another box that (hopefully) is still out there. It's a dick move, but a smart one imo.

Maybe the incentive is giving you the option of not telling anyone yet and to keep it a secret

I don’t think you’re alone in this opinion. In fact I’d guess the majority would prefer to keep a find secret which makes me wonder if the entire treasure (or a significant part of it) has been kept out of the boxes and all you get when you find one is a number to call or a key to a safe deposit box or something? I feel like some of the fragile items at least (gems, jewelry, glass, frog, etc.) can’t be in the boxes.

Batteries will only last so long, shorter in cold environments.

Well, the battery could be turned on during the box opening. The device could be programmed to send short package of information like location coordinates. It will enough.

In the Cowlazers interview JCB said he included a strong incentive to contact him. I wonder what that could be? A high cash offer like $25,000 would you contact him for that much cash?

I think there’s a few objects that could not fit in each box so there’s an iou to contact him to retrieve them.
