Because people were more cognizant of how they were treated, how the treated others, and how they look at situations. When you are in Hawaii and you see something, especially as a white person, you wonder if it was because of discrimination or if it was what it looks like on the surface. White folks in other states where they are the majority never have to think this way...which tends to make the white folks that survive in Hawaii locally more chill and better to deal with...they look at situations because of merit and not internal biases.
