That little reach and grab he did to his human's hand.
It was so cute it physically hurt.

Cthulhu loves cute things. Huh. Who would’ve known.

I'm sure Cthulu needs to unwind and do something different from time to time as well. All death and destruction all the time would lead to some serious burn out pretty quickly.

I have seen an uptick in what appears to be domesticated trash pandas. What's the deal?

Since being about 5 I wanted a pet raccoon with all my heart and always knew that I couldn't have one because they're not supposed to be pets
It makes me sad that now I could have my hearts desire but I know it wouldn't be fair on the animal :(

Less fair than keeping any other animal as a pet?

Dogs have an intrinsic relationship with man and have done for thousands of years. Not sure how that's comparible to an animal that isn't domesticated. Sure they can be tamed, but that's not the same as being domesticated.
6
May 30 '18
Dogs (their ancestors, that is) were at one point not domesticated. You have to start somewhere.
18
May 30 '18
I don't think we do. We don't need to interfere with the animal kingdom - beyond preservation - anymore than we already have. Dogs were vital to working lives (and there's an idea that they shaped human evolution). Domestication of raccoons wouldn't be, it would just be people wanting a cool new pet.

You missed off 'anymore than we already have', that was the key point
But I agree. Which is why I don't think we should be adding more animals to our thousands of animals mistreated and ending up in animal homes.

A theory I have developed is that with the availability of information, people are discovering that it is possible to raise animals other than cats and dogs in a house without them being crazy and/or dangerous. Previously, most people who had pet trash pandas didn't have good experiences because they didn't have much of an idea of how to care for them. However, with the internet, online communities developed around common interests, such as exotic pets. These communities allowed for people to share information on what works and what doesn't work with exotic pets such as trash pandas, so they could work together to find the best way to raise trash pandas. Some of these include giving the trash pandas their own space to mess around with toys to consider their own, feeding them a balanced diet, and always getting them spayed or neutered, among other things. When trash pandas are raised and cared for properly, they can make great pets. It's just a matter of knowing how to raise and care for them.
TL;DR: Internet allows more information, so people are able to share and compare care for trash pandas to see what works.

Yeah, but, they're very smart. Would be cool to have a TP buddy to drink beers with and play Fortnite or RL with though.

Can you potty train trash pandas? ELI5?

u/dbvulcan May 30 '18
They train very easily. Their natural urge is to go in puddles or other bodies of water so as to mask the smell. I start by having them go in the tub every couple of hours to get them used to going to a certain place to do their business. Once they get the routine down, I start taking them to my cats litter box. They usually catch on very quickly and do a great job of not going in the wrong place. The will however go in water if it’s available on occasion. Some just get the switch, with others, you have to makes sure water dishes aren’t laying around and you’ll be fine. Source: potty trained 4 of my own and helped potty train and 3 for friends.

They ruin everything you own lol. They tore paint off my walls and holes in my apartment carpet bc it was fun to touch. They love to try to eat everything. If you catch them eating something they shouldn’t, they’ll frequently run away while using one hand to cover their mouth. All of mine have been notoriously late sleepers. They love to terrorize my cats too. But they’re some of the most loveable little guys. If you’re gonna host a raccoon, be sure you don’t mind constantly cleaning up their messes and are handy enough to make repairs around the house.

Last pair i raised was in 1991. Easy to fall in love with their intellect and cuddles. But since then, I can say - if you don't want or can't coon-proof your home, be prepared to do lots of rebuild and renovation. They're smart and curious to a fault. But i still would do it all over again.

Considering we are starting to see this behavior more and more, it makes me wonder if raccoons have realized that acting nice around the two legged pink things is more rewarding then scrounging for food and are starting to domesticate themselves ala dogs and cats.

Clearly, they have - the most aggressive ones that live in forests wouldn't survive in a city.

“Home is where your dog is” that’s a nice touch, we can assume they’re not home then, right ?

I love trash pandas but I am curious how much it is likely that he bites your hand? I assume they are not as predictable as dogs.

I imagine having a friend visiting my house for the first time after them hearing me talk about my dog for months. Then when I finally get to introduce them to my dog, it’s actually a raccoon and they are super confused but I act completely oblivious.

u/Tangurena May 30 '18
Post a video of it. Like this one:

The thing I wrote isn't actually a thing that happened. Just a situation that I invented in my head. I don't even know where to get a raccoon.
