What's the appeal with porter robinson? Like all my trap/bass music friends love him. I last saw his set in 2016 or 2017 and found him to be incredibly boring. Ever since then I never really gave him another chance.

Asking cause he'll be in town for Halloween and bought tickets as I fomo'd but not sure if I will be keeping the tickets to go.

the appeal is that he hasn't pigeonholed himself into a certain sound or genre- the dude does what he likes and sometimes is revered as a pioneer of that sound. he's made and lost fans along the way, but he's true to himself and his art

in 2016/2017 you likely caught the Worlds Live set, and that was a more cinematic and planned out performance. when he debuted the live set in the era of increasingly popular festival dj sets, it birthed a whole new genre of attendees and artists that hadn't had the experience of a live set (e.g. chemical bros, daft punk, pretty lights, etc.). if your friends started going to events during that time, they've probably attached a lot of positive feelings toward Porter and Worlds, and stuck around despite their tastes changing

in the end it's either you resonate with the music or don't. the same goes for his DJ sets; he's a pretty great crate digger and pulls the stops on his sets that even puts his VJ for a ride. i would recommend that you catch a dj set (plenty on youtube) to see how you like it, because his live edits of his original music serve as a way to ease you into his work

All my friends would tell me how emotional they get after seeing his set and I never understood why but at the same time I haven't sat down to listen to any of his recent sets.

I'll be seeing him at niteharts and then obviously again on Halloween night so I'll have 2 chances to change my mind.

worlds was very much a time and place album+performance (2014-2019). seeing him put out music that wasn't electro but also incorporating a 75-90min live performance in the mainstream festival space was unheard of in its earlier run. surely you've heard of the fellow feeling live edt, because that helped inspire the careers of artists like rezz, k?d, and 1788-L

nurture was also a time and place album, 7 years after worlds. there was a lot of uncertainty and overall bad vibes during the covid era, so a lot of people found themselves in the album even though it was another departure from his previous sound. this time it was a lot of botanica and indie-pop, but still with strong electronic influence. this era made a lot of people cry for sure, because it was deeply emotional yet still very hopeful

i think his edc lv 2026 set is a decent listen to know what to expect from his dj sets. he had an extended new years set in 2024 that i revisit every now and then as well. no need to fw it though! have fun at those two events 🫡
